Motor mounts

Post by CMB »

Getting ready to do motor mounts in near future. I am hoping this will help an annoying vibration at idle. Will also fabricate soem sort of replacemtn fro the engine dampener.

My question..at roughly 55 per toyota motor mount compared to 18 per mount for aftermarket Beck Arnley i am leaning towards Beck arnley...does anyone have expereince with this brand motor mount?

Also,is the tranny mount tpyically replaced at same time as motor mounts or is this mount generally longer lasting. I asked because I have a camry that had shot motor mounts, but trany mount was perfectly fine. I probably need to just get my ass under the car with a pry bar and check it out. Maybe after I get back into town.

I ordered a set of Beck/Arnley AE86 engine mounts from Rock Auto and they ended up being Toyota mounts. Seriously, even with Toyota part #s and stickers. Toyota charges up to $65 a pop and I got the pair for under $60 shipped.

So far I have a few pairs of the B/A s and they've help up well. No complaints.

i used beck arnley in mine, no complaints here either. my old motor mounts weren't too bad but we figured while the engine was out we would do them. i checked the trans mount recently and it looks fine even though it's never been replaced. seems like they do last longer.

rear mount has much less stress on them and are less likely to fail. Certain petrochemicals however can weaken and damage them, so it is best to check.

Sometimes the aftermarket supplier buys from the same manufacturer as the factory, it pays to find out what brand the parts are even if it comes from an aftermarket supplier. I was burned with some clearly defective toyota piston rings from Beck-Arnly (fortunately I did not install them, but I lost a day taking them back and ordering another brand-they had three different size rings in the same box!), so I am leery of anything in a B-A box, but that does not mean that other parts are not top quality.

I just put on a set of B&A from Rock Auto. They were Taiwanese, not Japanese, but seem of acceptable quality. Couple of things to note: (1) they did not come with nuts or washers and (2) each mount had the same size bolt (12mm I think...) welded to the metal mount plate but the bolts had a different thread pitch-- left was 1.5 (fine) right was 1.25 (super fine). This proved irksome trying to find all-metal lock nuts in town here.

The parts guy at the store where I bought the rings said that Beck-Arnly used to be an excellent supplier, but recently their quality has gone down hill across the line. I told him I would consider dropping them as a supplier. He agreed, but of course it was not up to him (it was AutoZone). I suggested he relay that comment, and the recent experience with the rings, to the corporate buyers so they might consider it if they get enough complaints from the stores. It reflect badly on the chain, and cost them money to correct the supplier's mistakes all the time, not to mention frustrating their customers.

Your experience with the B-A mounts is a good example: the supplier is supposed to be making the mounts to a Toyota drawing, it is not likely they called out different threads on the mounts, the cut rate supplier used the thread stock they had on hand ignoring the specification. What else did they choose to substitute to cut cost? no thanks. Inferior parts are a waste of time no matter how cheap.

I ordered the Beck Arnley mounts yesterday after reading the first couple of posts here. Of course, now the posts I have read sense ordering have me second guessing the choice. I guess I will see what shows up in the package and decide if I want to put it on or return the part and head down to the dealership.

thanks for the posts, I had to order a set while doing the Engine Swap, it makes sense to do them while the motor is out. Nobody here in town (Boise) had any in stock, and EVERYONE wanted more than $30.00 Each, Napa wanted almost $50.00 each (for B-A parts). Found some on www.partsgeek.com for $10.00 each. When they showed up, the boxes were identical and marked "made in Thailand". Inside one box was a mount in a plastic bag marked "made in china" inside the other box a mount (no plastic bag). The only difference between the two (as far as I could tell) was that the one "made in china had a 12 x1.5 thread-pitch instead of the 12x1.25 pitch used by toyota. Had to take a tirp to the hardware store to get a couple of nuts that fit. A bit of a hassle all in all but I can buy 2 more motor mounts before I spend as much as I would have special ordering from Napa, Oriley, or Autozone.
