I miss my Tercel. :(

Post by 4x4wagon »

I really do.

Howdy all, haven't forgotten about you, or the T4wd, just haven't been able to find another one. I really really miss mine, even being the bucket it was. If it wasn't for my crunchy transmission, I'd probably still have it now. But the Legend I bought with the money from it and the 4Runner is still doing, well it's not doing well. I found a LOT of hidden rust, I've lost two alternators, the security system seems to hate me ( hood latch sensors keep going bad) and the 5spd transmission I put in it is not doing so hot. It's making a funny noise like a throw out bearing when idling, I'm thinking it's the input shaft bearing (I know it's not the throw out bearing, it's new and it makes the noise even with the bearing engaged), and it's gone through a couple C/V axles. Oh but I did finally fix the check engine light, it kept telling me I had a bad TDC sensor, and I kept replacing it (it's part of the distributor, have to replace the entire thing) but it turned out to be just a grounded out wire.

I've also got a Saab now ('94 GM900 5dr SE V6) that's been sitting in the garage since last spring with no engine, just can't find one for a reasonable price.

For the daily driving, I've got a '93 Escort wagon that's sadly automatic. I bought another '93 Escort 2dr with 67k actual miles from the original owner that I planned on putting a clutch in and reselling, but the lady that owned it apparently didn't take good care of it, the body was so rusted out, after poking around the body a bit, there were huge holes in it, and massive holes in the trunk. That, and bolts kept breaking on the front end trying to get the transmission out. So it's in the back yard being parted out, already sold the engine and put a lot of the parts on the wagon, shocks, springs, wheels and tires, few interior pieces, lower ball joints, tie rods, brakes, clean clear headlights, and some misc engine parts like the coil pack and MAF sensor. One of these days I am going to put the 5spd in though, probably when the automatic dies, and when I do I'm getting a manual steering rack. So I'd say I got my moneys worth out of it. Paid $125 for the car, and got $350 out of the motor, plus all the parts I've put on the wagon, it was a very good investment. :P

I've been watching the classifieds for a T4wd, but haven't found anything yet. :( Just thought I'd check back in and see what kind of crazy things you people are doing this winter with your wagons!

Here's a couple pics of my cars.

This is the car that replaced the Terd.

You'll have to excuse all the dirt and dust, this car sees a lot of gravel roads, and I hadn't cleaned the interior in a while.
The floor mats I bleached mostly for sh!ts and giggles because they were really nasty and brown.

Image

Those aren't neons in the back seat, that's the cold cathode light kit I had in the trunk that died on me.

Image

And the BBS wheels I picked up at the junk yard for nearly nothing. 8)

Here's the Saab, it was at the same junk yard I got the Tercel at, I worked for him for a couple days and he gave it to me. Just needs an engine.

Image

And here's the daily wagon. It's rough, but other than a couple leaky radiators and a broken timing belt (non-interference motor FTW) it's been very reliable. The only rusty part on it is at the back of the rocker panel there just below the rear door. Whoever had the car before me must have ditched it hard, the under-body is smashed up pretty good, and that rocker is bashed in, that's where it's rusty, right where it got smashed.

And here's that parts car sitting in the back yard under a couple feet of snow, stripped to the nubbins.

So that's what I've been up to, what's up with you guys?

In a couple of weeks I will find out more concerning what I think is a parts car about 80 miles from where I live. Hopefully I can talk to the owner and see what's up, most likely it has little or no rust. I'll be sure to take some pics and post here what I find. I know I'm far away from most of you guys but info is always a good thing.

Use craizedlist to search all the local state craig's list at the same time. Traveling to nearby states are often worth while if you can find a good deal, or a decent fixer. Also you have to keep your eyes open for these cars in people's back lots, side yards, etc. Many people will stick these cars in a side lot or garage to "fix later" because they can not stand the idea of selling it to wrecking yard when it needs major repairs, and they just sit. I have found several that way for only $100 or so, bodies were in great shape. Often they are happy to see it go to someone who can use it, and they reclaim their garage or back yard when you tow it off.

Once you get bit by the "Tercel bug" it's really hard not to go back. These little cars grow on you in a sort of magical and mysterious way. I can't really describe it, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. If you travel outside the rust belt you can find a nice solid one that you can devote your time and efforts into without it falling apart. Good luck and just keep looking...

I'm thankful to have two (winter and summer) Right now I have my eyes on a super nice 86 SR5 back home in California. An old man (with great taste) bought it new, put 150K on it, then died. His wife is currently like 95 years old, and her new partner (a sane 80) promises me it's mine when she finally moves on. It's about the cleanest T4wd I've ever seen...you'll see (eventually) :) Did I mention $500 bucks?

I have a set of those BBS wheels....were on a 300zx. Too bad they aren't worth much. That SAAB v6...needs a t-belt every 60K...interference engine.....car-part.com has 3 pages of them...not too cheap though.

David - I sold the Terd to a guy over 3 hours away in Iowa who apparently drove it home with a crunchy gear box, bad right rear wheel bearing, and brake wheel cylinder, bad tie rod, no heat, badly tuned carb, a miss, and a slipping clutch mechanism. Apparently he made it though, I never heard from him again which I'm assuming is either a good thing or a bad thing. I'm happy where it went though, he was a serious Toyota guy, he and his friend showed up in a 2004 Corolla CE and he told me he had a 4Runner SR5, Corolla All-Trac wagon, Camry All-Trac, pickup SR5, and a Celica GT-S at home.

I actually found an amazing deal right after I sold my Tercel, but something went horribly wrong. My Terc was an '83 DLX with no options at all, and I found sitting out in this guys field, a fully loaded '86 SR5 6spd in the same gold color, with the checkered interior, cassette player, tach, A/C, sunroof, power steering, alloy wheels, and an inclinometer for crying out loud. He had it since new, wrecked it in '99, ran into something, don't recall what, but only wrecked the right headlight, bezel, fender, and corner light. Grille, hood, and bumper were untouched. He even had a brand new primered black fender in the back from Toyota. It had been sitting ever since he wrecked it, and told me it was mine for $125. I was stoked, I told him I would be back just as soon as I could to get it. Two weeks later, it was gone.

@ Takza, the BBS are worth a few dollars, not much, but I wouldn't call them cheap. I know that blasted Opal engine needs a belt every 60k, the only one I can find locally is at 86k or something with a broken belt, broken timing cover, and bent valves, and they still want $450, FOR A CORE ENGINE?! It's ridiculous. I can buy a brand new 3.2L for $1,800.

For those that don't know, here's my Tercel. From the time I found it in the weeds, to when I sold it.

I found the beast sitting in the weeds, hood on the roof, weeds growing out of everywhere. This was after I'd set the hood back on, and pulled it out a bit.

After pulling it up into the yard where I had gotten it started for the first time in years.

It was running off of that black plastic lawn mower fuel tank, found out later there was a large clog in the tank.

Image

Slapped some wheels on it from a Geo to take it for a spin. ( the ones on it wouldn't hold air anymore.)

Image

And I found my future rim. :)

Image

Finally at home a couple days later after I could arrange a tow, cleaned up a but, with the MR2 rims installed with new tires. :D

Little fun with the badges. :P

Installing some Supra fog lamps in place of the busted out turn signals.

Image

Got the engine bay cleaned up, and running all under it's own fuel system.

Image

Some rear speakers.

Image

Image

Fog lights done. Also pulled off the black door bump trim.

Image

Image

Image

And if you were wondering, I converted the filler lights in the headlight bezel to the turn signals.

Image

And I started to paint the interior black, but never did finish. I got the lower dash, door panels, center console, and a few other trim pieces done.

Image

Image

And that's all the more I got done to it. Only had it a couple months, but I really do miss it dearly. As you can see, it was a HUGE POS, but it was My POS T4wd. :(
