Side window detached.

Post by bajabound »

Does anyone know any trick to getting a door window back together?

I finally got around to taking the front passenger door apart, only to find that the window had come free from the clamp on the bottom of the glass- Trying to push it back in seems likely to damage the glass, or the mechanism. I'm trying to avoid fully disassembling the door if at all possible.

I can't be of anecdotal help, but did you check out the pertinent section in the FSM's Body section? Lots of info there, and I'm pretty sure it's covered.

FSM has a decent write-up on taking the entire door apart - I was hoping not to have to do that.
I can get at the hardware, but I can't seem to get the window back into the channel - at least without damaging something it seems.

once you have the door panel off it only takes a few minutes more to remove the window. Two 10mm bolts at the bottom edge, remove the external window trim (it is just held in place with clips, use a stiff putty knife to lift it up) and you can turn the window at an angle and wiggle it up and out the slot. I have done it a number of times, it is not that much trouble if I recall.

I would highly recommend removing it so you can see what you have and fix it properly. I have never taken the metal retainer off the lower edge, but it seems to me I would put it back with some kind of water proof adhesive (like Polyurethane glue) before I put it back back in the door.

Good luck.

that's funny
i just did that today for the first time
the glass was seperated from the channel
i cleaned the glass and the "U" shaped rubber
then i slid the rubber over the glass
the metal channel hammers on over the rubber
i used a brass hammer but a rubber one would work too
just hammer evenly across the length to slowly work it on without bending the metal channel
i had another window with the channel attached that i measured to make sure i got it in the right spot

also removed the metal channel from another window. the channel was was missing one of the bolt clips
i used a short piece of PVC pipe between the edge of the channel and my hammer to pound it off
work across the length of the channel to evenly remove it or the channel will bend out of shape

the glass is tough and i did not worry about it breaking at all
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

make sure and lubricate the window track and regulator with some lithium or graphite lube, and the window channels with silicone lube before you re-install the window. If not the friction could cause the channel to loose grip on the lower edge of the glass again.
