Hey guys, been awhile. Had to sign up again cause I lost my old password and the temp one just wasnt working.....anyway, onto another thread about my rear axle. Sorry guys...I really should write this stuff down.
If yall remember My 83 terc has the trans out of a 97 terc with 4:11 gears. My rear axle is still stock...with 3:73s.
Well...while saving up to fix the trans.... (stuck in 3rd...not 5th like I thought) I was cruising the junkyard today and came across a 1980 toyota corolla wagon. I know Ive been told If Im going to swap axles I need one out of a corolla alltrak. However...would the one from the 1980 corolla rwd wagon fit and work? I looked up some specs...its got 4:10 gears in the rear. which is what I need.
My question... will it fit?
It has leaf springs >.< how much of a PITA is it to swap to coil...or is it possible? OR is it possible to swap the leaf spring setup to the tercel? (the last one is highly improbable...just an Idea...)
Is the bolt pattern the same?
could I swap the gears themselves?
Its only $135 out the door. If theres a big market for those axles, I might just buy it and try it and if it dont fit, sell it for $200. IF theres a market for them...
axle swap question...yes another one from me.

I doubt there is much of a market for something that old, so I would not buy it unless you are going to use it.
But it would be much easier to just get the center diff carrier assembly out of it, it is likely the same but you need to double check. This is what is known as the third member, it holds the ring and pinion, input bearing and seal all together in an assembly. You remove the left and right axles first by pulling off the brake backing plates and yanking the axles straight out. than you remove the six or eight 12mm nuts around the perimeter of the diff housing and pull it straight out as a unit. Likely buying just the center diff assembly would be cheaper as well.
IF this is the same rear axle assembly as the Tercel4wd, the center diff will swap right into it.

Toyota said, way back, that this was the axle the T4WD was given, with the obvious suspension mods.
That said - check out the EPC available in the Parts Forum - be sure you go to the second one listed - it has drawings which are available with some diligent looking.
Dunno if it will help, but plug in our cars' info and note the part numbers for the third member (as Petros suggests) and then do the same for the Corolla wagon of the vintage you found.

the tercel does not have a rear axle, only the 4wd version has one.

Re: axle swap question...yes another one from me.
I just went and looked up the ring and pinion parts numbers and they are the same. So my guess is the whole third member should swap out from the rwd 1980 to the Tercel4wd.
