How about that! Take that, rusty car! Carb rebuild is complete FINALLY and all systems go heh heh heh
well not ALL systems but all carb systems, except my fast idle seems to be a little sticky and stays kinda high unless I push the throttle closed, then it slows down, la la la driving it around town yay!
Now perhaps I will splurge and put good oil in my tranny and rear end, that will make Typrus happy heh although it might not be amsoil
So, I think what was wrong, well the main thing that was wrong, was the accelerator pump. The leather "seal" on the pump (like a coleman lantern pump) may have been rolled up, cuz it was hard to pump....so got that right, but I bet the most thing was that as part of the accel pump, there is this little aluminum piston thing next to it....the piston doesn't do anything other than hold a spring in a hole, that pushes a bb-check valve....and apparantly there needed to be a small o-ring sitting atop that little aluminum piston thing. Just sitting there.....kinda challenging to keep it in place while reassembling actually...but it wasn't there when I took it apart, and the carb rebuild kit made no mention of it....but the factory service manual showed one (rather vaguely, I must say) so I thought "hmm" and put it in and yay!
Choke might have to be adjusted later.
So, carb rebuild tips:
1) do what the FSM says
2) when taking it apart, make a sketch of the carb with a letter at each hose connection, A B C etc, then as you take the hoses off, label them...I always either write on the tape "A A A A A A" or "alpha" "bravo" "charlie" etc for that awesome war-movie feel....but that helps when the writing gets somewhat obliterated from carb cleaner or heat or oil or whatever. Then, when you have to take the carb off for the second or third or fourth time, you won't have to re-label anything, you will have that sketch to go by!
3) long 1/4" extensions with the locking craftsman sockets are lifesavers!
4) oh and float level DOES matter, using the specs in the rebuild kit didn't work for me, I had to put it on, run the engine, look at the level, then take the top of the carb off (several phillips screws) and adjust the float....repeat...
IT WORKS!!!

Hey...you could ADD to our database of knowledge by doing a carb rebuild and intake gasket WRITEUP...while your memory is still fresh. Try to include all those seemingly unimportant details you've figured out?
Then you'd have to put it in the Repair Guides section......
The Tercel gods will smile down upon you till the end of your days...and your Tercel might actually talk to you.....if you listen.......
Why? Cause I'm gonna have to rebuild mine pretty soon.......... <_<

Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

Adelard, I almost missed this also. When I was reassembling mine, it just didn't look right. Nothing on the kit instructions, so I dug out the old gaskets that I had removed and saw a small rubber disc stuck to the gasket. The kit did not have any thing that resembled this, except for an o-ring. I peeled of the old disc and stuck it on and it worked.....and apparantly there needed to be a small o-ring sitting atop that little aluminum piston thing. Just sitting there.....kinda challenging to keep it in place while reassembling actually...but it wasn't there when I took it apart, and the carb rebuild kit made no mention of it....but the factory service manual showed one (rather vaguely, I must say) so I thought "hmm" and put it in and yay!
So beware and alert when dissasembling your carb for the rebuild.
Once your over the hill, you just pick up speed. <><

Funny you should mention that Typrus, I WAS going to do some nice fiberglass work, starting mostly with the holes in the floor, front and back, then maybe some metal underneath....but now? dunno
Actually, today my car said, "You THINK you are going to drive me around? I don't think so"
or maybe it said
"Hey hey hey you passed the junkyard!!" as I cruised by it on the highway. you hear that car? I should call and see how much they will give me! I'd be lucky to get $50
and even that I doubt...hm.
Ya know, I wouldn't be totally against taking a nice road trip and bringing the Tercel to someone on this group if they want it, for a nice low price, that is, assuming
a) I would find a sweet european car in the sub$2k range, any age to drive back
B) the tercel made it. Maybe it has a 50-mile limit from home, like one of those dog collars
