CV Joints and Power Steering noises.

Post by Toyocel »

I have an 1987 Tercel 4WD Auto and it was making clicking sounds while turning. Im sure it was the CV joints but today while driving the clicking sound disappeared. Also the steering has become a lot harder, I just topped up the power steering fluid and it did not really help with the steering. Could my CV joints just be toying with me or is something else going on? Maybe the ball joints too?
Thanks.

could be the u-joint on the steering shaft. Soak it in penetrating oil and see if that helps. The power steering pump can make noises when it is getting worn, and be loudest when the wheel is at full lock.

Usually when ball joints go they get loose, not tight, and the steering becomes sloppy. Really bad you notice a clunk, if it does that better not drive it until fixed, it could break off and loose control of the car.

Ticking from CV joints will only happen when accelerating hard through a corner, and sometimes if only one is bad, it will tick only when turning hard on that cv joint only. Mine have been clicking for over a year, so I am running an experiment to see how low I can go on the bad CV joints. I am now starting to get a vibration at high speed when accelerating, still good to drive ...for now.

ya my car was making what might be the same nose and while i was geting my 4 wheel whell alingment the guys at fountain tire told me and i took it to the toyo dealer and they looked at it for no charge and 1.5 hours later the they told me the pump was on its last legs and they put in a used one till the new one arives and it has cost me nothing so far. all i have to do is pay for the new pump. Dam these toyo dealers are nice i am very happy with the service. oh and not to change the subject but apparently my car had the 100,000 kms motor worrenty and i asked them if i still had it on my motor because it only has 91,000 and thay said no :( well at least i tryed :P

Thanks for the advice, I will try the penetrating oil on the u-joint tomorrow. The clicking sound only happened when turning left but now it's gone:/. Going to take it to my friends shop later in the week to grease the joints too.
