My Rockauto experience....

I ordered a couple of closeout parts for my truck...totaling around $52.

Turns out the brake cable didn't fit...1 foot too short and without the threaded end it needed.

So I send it back



Part was $14

Shipping/tax? was around $6...so a total of $20.

Cost to ship back was $8...since it had to go to Texas.

Cost to check to see if it fits and then pack it up and return it? $28 minus the $14 I expect back....or $14.

So...tell me life is fair.

And I doubt if they will do much more than relist it as it was...probably fits a 2WD shortbed truck.

My first rockauto experience was like that - ordered a rear trans mount for a Terc 4wd and they sent a 2wd version. They should have known they were different but a large number of the aftermarket catalogs don't make the 2wd/4wd distinction so RockAuto told me their catalogs were correct and the error was mine. I complained and they agreed to reimburse me for the cost and the shipping to me, but I still had to pay the shipping back. If I had been able to find Toyota part numbers so that I could prove it was their faulty catalog they might have paid shipping both directions. The RockAuto guy on the phone refused to consider that his catalog was incorrect (I tried to get him to change their application data) so they are probably still shipping the wrong part. I was afraid to order another part for years.

What I think happens in the aftermarket is that one reputable company had compiled application data, it is tallied by computer, and every other after market supplier copies that data file, errors and all, without checking it - it's the only way to explain the errors that persist across different manufacturers. As a result errors are never fixed. For a carb kit I've also found that the Schuck's O'Rielly's computer was incorrect and their paper catalog was correct - so a single supplier can be inconsistent as well.

I've relearned a lesson I learned a ways back....don't order online what you can find locally...unless you have no choice....or you think you are getting a good deal.

For whatever reason....RockAuto...is the last place to admit a mistake.

I ordered two sets of rear brake shoes and they were too small (for 2wd)
I called and the guy agreed i did nothing wrong so he told me to keep the shoes and he sent me the correct sets.
Any one out there need those small ones? (just cover shipping)

Another time I received a distributor cap that was in the correct box but not the right cap
Same thing, keep it and they sent the correct one
I have no idea what car the wrong cap is for

There is a round dist cap for the same year tercel...see it all the time when looking for one.

So it's been 2 months since this order was placed...they NOW can't find the package...I'm out $28 and a lot of hassle.

So if it isn't randomly HIGH shipping rates...it's the wrong part and no refund. Last time for me....
