I've got to replace my transmission/differental unit in my '83 Tercel Wagon 4wd and from the manual I was looking at it seemed like one can change this unit from underneath, and not have to pull the engine.

Yep, done it twice from underneath.....not what i'd call easy, but not extremely difficult, either.
1984 Tercel 4wd Dlx. - 192K miles.
1985 Tercel 4wd SR5 - 185K miles (not running)
1986 Tercel 4wd Dlx - 210K miles (dd)
Only 3 to go for the whole set ! lol
