Radiator

Post by TraptLP »

Hey everyone,

When I bought my terc it's radiator was cracked and the previous owner added some JB weld to it... well in an effort to increase the reliability of my car I decided to order a brand new radiator at advanced auto parts... turns out it did not fit my car. It's an 85 SR5. The core was too thick and it was rubbing against the fan shroud and wouldn't install properly. I'm kinda confused as to where I can get one that will actually fit my car...

Does anyone have a website that they ordered from and got an exact fit? Any help is appreciated!

Just get a Koyo brand unit for it. Koyo is an OEM supplier for 'yota and their rads are available aftermarket. I have an '85 SR5 also and my Koyo rad was a perfect fit.

Out of curiosity, I did a Google search for Koyo radiators: I was surprised by the one price I looked at - $122, at http://www.carstuff.com.
Note that this is not necessarily an endorsement of the vendor; I was just curious about general pricing. I swear, this is a LOT less than the OE radiator was going to cost me back in '85 after my Beloved Sister cooked mine - so I had a real radiator shop fix it for I-don't-remember-how-many dollars.
As an aside, I found a couple of Toy dealers selling the radiators for $335 +/-. The site of my favorite, Butler of Indy, is still down for a complete revampment.

A thicker core is better, see if you can shim the fan out to make it fit. If I remember there are three mounts that hold the shroud (with the electric motor mounted in it) in front of the rad. If you take the fan assembly out you also might be able to just bent the mounts so you get more clearance. Even in a normal install this clearance is rather tight and can be a PIA to get the rad in and out.

I would rather alter the fan or shim it out and have the thicker rad.

Good luck.

Thicker rad is a lot better. Try to use it.

when mine rattled out of it's shoddy bracket and got a big hole rubbed in it from the pully wheel,
i went onto ebay and found one that had hose connections on the same side, turned out i got a Nissan Skyline radiator, fits fine, and is about 2x the size of the original!

This member, gmeddy, lives in Australia.
The Skyline has been around for decades throughout much of the world (save North America), and has seen myriad changes - some models were quite the hot cars back in the '70s and '80s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Skyline
It is in the USA ( & Canada ?) currently as the Infiniti G35 and now G37.

Thanks for all responses everyone... I'm currently returning a radiator that I ordered from an online source, which will remain anonymous  , and I'm happy to report that a Koyo rad has been installed today that I got from a local radiator shop.
Now, me and my friend shall embark on an epic journey from GA to OH in our tercel. Godspeed.

as a signal core radiator , everytime I remove the RAD out ,it alway the "FAN SHROUD" as trouble maker, I try move forward and backward ,yank it all different ways ,weather single or double core , both have same upper and lower tanks , anyway I add 1/2 inch spacer at bottom to move fan shroud foward .

ohh yeah ,NISSAN SKYLINE in Canada , yes we do have some but we have way to many NISSAN SKYLINE GTR, they are from Japan as right-handed drve , they only ship to British columbia as far I know, all kind of SUV/minitrucks/sport cars and SPRINT(TERCEL-4WD) I have not seen them but it on-line for sale, As right handed drive are unsafe in some way, like trying to pass slow vehicle on single lane ,turning left is pretty tough for some drivers, and some parts are only for in Japan .
