83 rear end swap

Post by badmechanicagain »

it seems i've destroyed my 3rd member, finding parts from toyota or aftermarket hasn't worked, so i'm lookin at the junk yards, since these cars are so rare i'm looking for possibly a rearend from another similar car that will fit and hopefully no wielding, and no gear swap? plz lemme know i'm really in a tight spot.

Not totally sure but I strongly suspect that a Corolla ae86 SR5 pumpkin would be a direct fit for a Tercel 4wd wagon as long as you are looking for a 4.1:1 gear ratio, that is.

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I once carefully inspected and measured the 3rd member on an AE86 GTS and it is NOT interchangable, they are larger (stronger) 6.7" dia vs. 6.2" on the Tercel. The 3rd member has I think 10 bolts, while the tercel uses 8 (or something like that, count them yourself to make sure). I do not know about the non-GTS, but our corolla all-trac has the same rear axle as the rwd GTS, so I suspect the 3rd member is not directly interchangeable. But the whole axle assembly is interchangeable since the suspension pick-up points are the same and it is the same width. The only issues is the larger flange on the diff input shaft. The input flange on the Tercel diff might swap over, or you have to take your drive shaft to a shop and have them mount the rear flange from the corolla drive shaft on the end of the Tercel drive shaft.

Also the GTS uses a 4.3:1 std ratio, and the SR5 uses 4.1:1 (the same as our All-Trac), so unless you have a front diff on your Tercel from an '85 or newer, you can not use them.

The older and lighter rwd corollas might use exactly the same rear axle as the Tercel with the 6.2 dia diff. Did Toyota ever make a RWD Tercel?

Best is just to find a Tercel 4wd 3rd member. I know there are a few members that have parts cars. Also there are internet used parts networks where you list what you need and various member wrecking yards around the country will email you a price including shipping. The local pull-a-part type yard is cheapest, but the mail order wrecking yards are the next best bet.

Verified. I just learned on another list that the non-GTS rwd corolla use the same rear diff as the Tercels. It must be that our heavier Corolla all-trac has the larger 6.7" diff (I wonder if it has a LSD, I will have to check that out) and the higher powered GTS versions also use the 6.7" diff.

So it appears any rwd corolla from '83-'87 (non-GTS) will have the same rear axle, with the 4.1 gear set.
