EGR Question with attached pic

Post by scouttster »

A couple pics of the EGR cleaned out. EGR was stuffed pack full of carbon.
Anyway, if I suck in on that black rubber hose and pinch of the suction with my tongue and it holds the vacuum then the EGR is fine? Correct?
I have done just this and I hear the diaphragm move in and it holds the suction. Thanks

I presume you reviewed this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1496 ?
I also used oven cleaner, as noted in the last paragraph of the above link. It worked quite well in getting out the last vestiges of the carbon - particularly in the chamber under the little pipe.

On Toyota EGR valves I find that the vac diaphragms fail only very rarely. Usually they are replaced because, with high mileage, they will be a source of a vacuum leak as the pintle (think valve stem) of the EGR valve has worn, along with it's bore in the valve body, and fresh air is sucked into the intake tract at that point. Causes a lean misfire at idle.

I forgot to ask, scouttster - I presume you removed and cleaned the big source tube from the manifold to the EGR valve? Mine had a pretty good buildup in it, too; I used the "flexhone" mentioned in the link and then quite a bit of oven cleaner in it.

Arch-
Yes, cleaned and gave the tube the angioplasty as well... The tube wasn't as bad. I used a small flex wire and soaked the whole tube in gasoline for several hours.
Nice pics and write-up on the EGR clean-out. I like the idea using oven cleaner and I bet that works well..
