Questions about Tercel mysteries

Post by Meck »

I have an '85 Tercel 4wd that I've owned for 12+ years. During all these years there have been two mysteries about the vehicle that I'm just now getting around to asking about. I'm hoping somebody can help me out. (1) My manual mentions over and over again the car's computer. I have yet to ever come across anything in this vehicle that looks like a computer. Where is it? (2) Everything on this car works except the intermittent wipers. There is no wiper relay in the spot suggested by the manual and I can't find one elsewhere. The local parts store tells me that they show no relay for the '85 Tercel, although they have them for '84 and before and for '86 and after. I bought a second '85 model for a parts car on which everything worked except, you guessed it, the intermittent wipers. Can someone tell me where the relay is? If it doesn't have a relay, how do these things work? Thanks for any info. you experienced people can give me--

There was a thread just last week about the intermittent feature and a link to previous info (my own does not work, either).
The '85 FSM is available for perusal/download on the front page of the site.

the computer brain is under dash above glove compartment
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

That is supposed to be the AC control box? I also thought this was the ECU..but it has an adjustment for the AC on it also...or it is for the AC.

Thanks for the replies. The thread on the intermittent wipers was of help. As for the computer, maybe it'll show up one of these days. If not, it's no great loss not knowing where it is.

As xirdneh wrote, the ECU is nestled in the "curve" of the dash, above the glovebox. It's kinda hard to see with out a mirror; tilt it so you can look "back" at the dash. It's an oblong dark box, maybe 10-12" inches long. It's pretty unobtrusive. The POS FSM is mum about it - I had queried the Mothership a couple of times; not only did it NOT tell me anything, it specifically REFUSED to tell me anything about how to test it, etc.
The AC control box has the little twistie to which takza refers, but that is on the black HVAC system itself, in front of the glovebox.
