Door Adjustment

Post by ChrisC »

Well I replaced my old rotted out drivers door with one in much better shape. But now it doesnt close 100%. I get that nice wind sound coming in and can see a slight amount of light inbetween the piller and the door. Now I am woundering how to adjust the door so it closes tighter. When I apply pressure from the outside the door comes in more. Any one ever done this before?

The trick is to put a 2x4 somewhere in the door hinge area and close it just a little. I've seen it done but don't know how to do it myself. Some old timers at a body shop can do it though.

Before you use a 2x4, check the adjustments first. I have not done this on a Toyota, but usually most manufacturers have adjustable hindges/latch, and I have done this on many other cars.

You loosen the mounting bolts to the latch and the hinges to snug tight and slam the door several times, and then tighten the bolts. Usually the adjustable side is on the body door frame, but it is possible it is on the door side. If it is stubborn, you can also loosen the hinge bolts and tap them into position with a large rubber mallet, or a padded pry bar. It is usually pretty straightforward when you know what to do.

Good luck.
