So my starter has finally given up on starting. I took it apart and I am trying to change the brushes as they are about 1/3 the size that they should be but I cannot get the old ones off. Before I wreck it, I thought that I would ask if there is an easy way to take them off? It looks like they are connected to the starter wires by a clamp/folded piece of metal. Can I just pry that apart or do I need a special tool?
Thanks
How do i replace the starter brushes?

Re: How do i replace the starter brushes?
Anyone? ?? I have been in the field 16hrs a day the past 2.5 weeks so the starter is still stitting on the work bench...
I am tempted to get some sort of conducting clamp and cut the old brush off the copper braided-cable and clamp the new one to the old braided-cable. The only problem I see is the electrical connection.
I am mechanically illiterate but inclined so if anyone has any tips or advice it would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks,
S

Re: How do i replace the starter brushes?
Have you checked the solenoid contacts? 1/3rd brush should still function. As long as there's tension they will go all the way down to the leads.
I have revived every dead/dying Toy starter that I have met with a solenoid contact kit thus far.
As far as starter brush replacement. I haven't replaced any in a couple decades. I do remember needing a monstrous soldering iron to do it. But that was on a Ford moveable pole shoe starter, so they might have been 2-3 times as big as a Toy's brushes.
Also, how much is a new brush holder assy? Even if it's got a manual tranny why risk starting problems?

I am not sure on the cost of the holder but the brushes were $5 each.
I will have to try the contacts first as they look like they will be easier to change out. Thanks!
