Headlight Questions for 1987 Wagon

Post by biathlon »

Hi,

I have a 1987 Wagon FWD and the headlights have a serious moisture problem. The OEM headlights are priced by monkeys apparently so I'm wondering if you can buy a sealed beam or some kind of other replacement headlight? Do they bolt on where the existing headlight assembly is or ???

My apologies if this has been answered before, I searched for this on the forum but didn't get a clear answer.

thanks,

Colin

I'm going to say go into a junkyard, get lucky and maybe find an 87 with a horrible rear-end accident. call around first to see if they have some 87's in the yard. sometimes junkyards will actually sell some aftermarket lights for your car.

Call Napa, carquest, see what they can get for it too.

Actually, I think they are priced by Halliburton and/or KBR...
Wow - they are expensive; I just looked on ADV's site for the assembly - $182 each and upwards, without the bulb!
While that site stated they are only used on '87s onwards - perhaps you might check with a Corolla/MR2 site - perhaps they use the same thing? Maybe those guys have solved the dilemma with an alternate...

If all you find is older terc's in the yards, maybe yours still uses/has the same mounting points on the core support to easily allow converting it to the "classic" T4wd front end.

That would be my first idea if I was in this dilemma. I'll take cheaply renewable glass over premium priced plastic anyday.

At those prices a parts car might make more sense!

biathlon - I've got an '87 2WD as well, and have converted to the old style headlights (see my avatar) and installed a relay and Hellas - huge difference. Read the entire thread here for my posts on the subject viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2516&st=0&sk=t&sd=a If you have any questions, pm me. I still have my original headlights if you want them (pm me and we can discuss) - the drivers side has corrosion on the internal reflector and is not all that great, but the passenger side is in good shape ± 90% new. Glass is all intact.
