Busted front differential case

Post by Lazymechanic »

Not really a question, but someone might enlighten me. I noticed oil beading on my rear window on the highway last week and it took me a day to find the gushing leak. In that time I started to hear gear whine which clued me into where to look. Turned out to be a triangular crack in the front differential case. There was evidence of some sort of flange having been broke off near the area so it may have pulled openthe case in the process of tearing off. But this wound looked old, and the size and shape of the hole really looked like something flew off the gears and slammed down from the inside. And yet there's no sound of chipped teeth or any other kind of damage to the drive train now that I've sealed it up and refilled it. Anyway, I rolled it up on ramps, sprayed the area with carb cleaner, and epoxied the hole closed with JB weld. That was last week and its been like nothing ever happend for 200+ miles now. Spooky. I think I really dodged a bullet, but of course I'm jinxing myself by telling you all. Anyway, wish me luck guys and if anyone else knows what could have flown off then dissappeared let me know.

Anyway, with tears in our eyes we went off looking for another place to put the garbage. . .

If you didn't see any bigger steel chunks coming out when you drained it...maybe you got lucky. Somebody (we can't say who  ) could've hit a rock.
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

Yea, it wud'n like I was comin from the bar or nuthin. I'd a noticed runnin off the road. Somethin probably kicked up and did it. But it really looked like it came from the inside. I especially remember winding it out off the line to get over a few lanes to the on-ramp. I stuck my pinky in the drain hole and fished around for chunks. There wasn't any shrapnell and I couldn't find a big'un. And there's no noise. No rough vibe that comes and goes at an iterval relative to my speed. Nothing. The more I talk about it the more I summon the mystery to be solved in a big blow up on the highway. The whole thing spooks me. I fired up the lawn tractor yesterday and it's finally barreled it's jug to where it won't make power. I'm hopin the gremlins will focus on that 'til the money starts rollin in 'cause this one's gonna need some down time soon. It's time to rebuild a motor or twelve. Just when I was gonna get started on the bikes. . . I wasn't lyin when I came up with the name Lazy mechanic.
