someone will drop in today or tomorrow to give you step by steps on the removal.

For finding one, try junkyards. They should want around 300 for one, which sucks but they can do it.

Or find a Tercel on craigslist, try the same year, but really any year will work for the tranny i think. Find one with a blown engine or something, good parts car yaknow?

Its pretty simple to pull a tranny, take out the kframe reinforments, rear driveline, front CV's, tranny stiffener bars on either side of the tranny, rear tranny mount, gear shifter, speedo cable, clutch cable and bellhousing bolts. trickiest part is pulling the gear shifter imo. I've got it down to a science now with the tools needed only takes me about 20min. hope that helps some!

Tranny interchanges: 83 and 84 are the same, but are different from 85, 86, 87, and 88 which are the same. Unless you wanna get real craft and take 2 trannies and make 1 out of the 2.. using the front diff from and 83/84 and the guts and case from the 85-88. never been attempted I don't think and I wouldn't suggest it.

You can remove the trans alone or along with the diff housing. Probably can find both for about the same price as the trans?

I think it is easiest to first remove all the things from under the hood and inside the car before you jack up the car. This would be remove the shift lever from inside the car first, remove the starter, the top two bolt on the back of the bell housing (just below the head, between the engine and the firewall), the side stiffening plates (one on each side between trans and block, easiest to reach from the top), and the clutch cable. Then jack the car up and place it on jack stands, remove the front wheels (only to give you room to work), unbolt the bottom of the struts, this will allow you to pull out the half shafts, I have found it is not necessary to remove the steering tie-rod or the brake lines to get enough movement to remove the half shafts. Drain the trans before you pull the the half shafts from the sides of the front diff. You can pull the half shafts and let them hang from the front struts, this way you do not have to unbolt those massive nuts from the wheel end of the half-shafts. Remove the rear drive shaft (I find it helps to raise one of the back wheels off the ground with the brakes off so you can rotate the drive shaft to get to all of the bolts), the linkage for the 4wd/2wd lever, wire connectors, speedo cable and exhaust bracket. Then put a jack under the rear cross member and unbolt it, lower the trans until the engine/trans hangs off the front engine mounts. Now you will have better access to the bell housing bolts, when you get these out it should slide right out. It is a bit heavy to hand lower it, so best put a jack under it and guide it with your hands, as worst get someone to help by holding one end of a long plank with a block under the trans. When the trans is pulled, the plank will take the weight of the trans and then you lower the end of the plank.

Nothing to it! <hah!>

Good luck.

I've read that it's not a good idea to allow the shafts to hang on the joints....makes them crap out due to the heavy load in one place....good idea to wire them up?

Yes, that would be a good idea. It also keeps the splines out of the dirt and you can wire them up out of the way. I do not think you can damage them this way they are made of some pretty tough material (though I suppose it is possible), but you can pop off the boot and let dirt in them.
