Time to do fuel pump?

Post by Logbear »

Here's the deal. I experienced what looked like a big oil leak in the front of the engine. The oil got real low and the oil light flickered a couple of times. It had been 50,000 miles since I did the timing belt so I figured I'd do the timing belt and front seal at the same time. As I was doing that job I also noticed that the front of the oil pan looked leaky. There was some old orange silicone seal that had pealed off the front of the oil pan. To finish the job I cleaned up the front of the pan and put some new grey silicone stuff on the pan and it looks real good.
Now I'm wondering if I might have a fuel pump leaking gas into the crankcase. There was a slight odor of gas when there was a lot of the leaked oil. I had to add 2 quarts of oil and have since drained that oil. The drained oil doesn't smell gassy but that oil was only in there for a few days.
I haven't driven the car very far since I did this work. Now I'm wondering if I should give it a new fuel pump before I get back to the daily 80 mile commute.
Should I just go ahead and change the fuel pump? The car has over 300,000 miles on it.
