Battery ?

Post by xirdneh »

Seems like whenever I remove a battery from a Tercel that I plan to work on, over the following months, the battery is dead by the time I plan to use it again. When I try to recharge it it does not take the charge and I end up taking the battery to the recycle shop and buying a new one.
What is going on here?
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Are you setting it on concrete? I don't know why but that discharges batteries. Always set them on a piece of plywood or plastic. Get a small 2 amp battery charger and leave it hooked up, or better yet, hook it up once a week for several hours.

I have had the same problem. If you know it is going to sit for a while you should clean off the outside (especially the top) with soap and water, and place it on wood or plastic for storage, preerably off the floor. It can discharge through the grease and grim on the battery too. And then charge it up about once a month. The battery store says you should only have to charege it once every three months, but I have found that is not offten enough.

I think if it is allowed to sit too long in a discarched condtion corrosion builds up on the internal plates and makes it useless. Your only option is to get a new one since there is not a way I know of to restore it at that point.

a trickle charge can bring back almost any battery, in my experience.

I had a battery that i thought was no good, and had left on a concrete floor for months, outside, etc etc.

decided to give it a 2A charge for the hell of it, the battery is just fine, took about 2 days to charge it up, but once i did that it was showing 12.7V, now after a few months its got 12.46V, i leave it on a block of wood now on my bench so it won't discharge as quickly.

I plan on putting it in the back of the tercel for a dual battery set-up.
