in front of the windshield water passes through those slots and runs to the ground between the fender and body. if you live around falling pine needles (like i do) they collect down there and if these cars are anything like my truck once the pile gets to a certain height the water comes thru the fresh air vent.
also if your floor is beginning to rust out it will seep in that way too. if that is the case smear some wet/dry roof patch (messy stuff) underneath and press alum foil over it. that is a poor man fix but works for a long time.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I would also check the drain holes in the bottom of the door. Open the door and look along the bottom for a couple of square holes, they must be free.

The fresh air intake is on the passenger side so I would also look where the clutch cable comes through the firewall and any other penetrations of the firewall, especially if any are due to mods.

I had the cover off and did some stuff to try and seal it, but I still get water down in the driver's footwell...so I did the next best thing and put a good bit of old oil under the carpet down on the sheetmetal. Theres a jute pad under the carpet and heavy tar type "stuff" on the metal, but I worked the oil into the most likely places to rust.
