Stuck in gear. Manual.

Post by Neu »

So i'm driving down the road and I put it into 4th, now I can only get it into 3rd gear but it feels like it's 4th. Even when the stick is in the neutral position it's in either 3rd or 4th gear.

Help? This is my ONLY running car. what could it be?

Yup, sounds like a cable or linkage problem. The fore and aft assembly is probably fine, but the lateral one may be boned.

You may need help to confirm what's going on, but have one person look at the linkage on the transmission while the other person moves the stick laterally. If they both move in unison, then the gear selector box is the culprit. If they don't move in unison, then you've got a broken cable or linkage.

It's a top loader and the linkage is internal. Could be ice in the box at the top of the transmission where the stick enters

I'd run it till good and warm...take the boots out inside on top the trans...get any water/rust/grit out of the shifter area...pour in about 1/2 cup gear oil...and get some kind of boot over it.

You might get lucky and have no internal damage. Good idea to change out the gear oil.

Don't ever want to be forcing the gear shift.
