ok, so my problem is i'm working on a 1991 GMC tracker (aka Suzuki sidekick) and the ECU is fried and the distributor no longer fires because its not getting a signal from the computer...
now, does anyone know if i could just convert it to megasquirt to fix the problem? or would i have to install a new ignition system too, like the ford EDIS? I'm not really sure if megasquirt can control the distributor the way i'm hoping it will.
my options for the tracker sucks, i can get it fixed for the cost of a megasquirt system (with no guarantees) pay out the nose for a new used computer (and the cost of two megasquirt systems for that matter) and the used one will probably blow up anyways, or i can go to the dealer and spend as much as this tracker cost my friend 3 months ago.
anyone know about megasquirt and GMC trackers?

pick-a-part charges $24 per ECU and their 3 trackers are all missing them.
i wen't to ralphs and the guy said he charges $450 each because he knows they blow up, and they are gone as soon as he gets a tracker in.
I haven't called any of the other yards, but I expect them to charge around the same as the 2nd guy...

Are reman (repaired) ECU's available at a reasonable cost. A repaired unit may actually be more reliable than a new one. I had an experience with a Mitsubushi ECU once, the repaired unit was not only repaired, the guy knew its weaknesses and upgraded it.
Places that repair these have a network where they pass around this kind of information. The repaired unit still cost me a little over $400, but that was half the cost of new.

thats what i'm thinking, the megasquirt would be cool, but it would be a long time tuning it and getting the sensors calibrated (using resistors to change the signal going to the computer)keith wrote:Are reman (repaired) ECU's available at a reasonable cost. my friend found a reman from the states for $89 or something and it comes with a lifetime guaruntee (and some sort of a 5 day trial period), so they are going to get that and i'll most likeley be the one putting it in.
