Converting 2wheel to 4wheel

Post by ESI-RStarion »

Would it be possible to convert a 2wheel to a 4wheel if you had all running gear from a 4wd?

Not easily. All of the floor stampings behind the front seats are different, which includes the suspension mounting points( and clearance) and the placement of the gas tank. The quarter panels are different as well, with the gas fillers on different sides of the body. It can be done, but you need to be prepared for a lot of fabrication.

20vtercel converted his 2wd 4-door-hatch (not wagon) to 4wd THEN did a 4AGE 20v turbocharged retrofit.
I believe he said he used an RX7 rear end.
He also said its not too hard as long as you have a good idea of what you're doing and have all the supplies you need.

I think it'd be cool to convert that Super Chicken to 4wd

That would not be worth the effort. You can buy running ones for a fraction of the cost all the messing around you would need to do.

If you have a good running 2wd you might hunt around for a 4wd to buy with a bad engine and use the two to make one running one. You should be able to get it for little more than the scrap value ($100-200 depending on condition of the body). Then take your good engine, seats, body parts, etc. and switch them over. Tip, if it has a bad trans it will not be worth much since the trans are becoming expensive and hard to find. If your 2wd has any value the way it is you could sell it and use the money to buy a good 4wd. Or a project one to make it the way you want it. Either way it would be far less work than coverting a 2wd to 4wd.

Good luck.

I've got a a t4wd that I rolled while camping, stripped everything worth while and am sending it to the scrapper, would keep it but the landlord told me it had to go or I did. Have tried Craigslist since I got back from camping (the 28th of july) Have seen 2 T4wd's an 87 for 1750 from a dealer in portland that was worth about 800, and an 84 for 1650 not worth much more than 800 to me because its a 160mile trip, in tacoma washington. Looks good, 107k orig miles, but the pictures show a missing SR5 trim peice on the front right fender and front passenger door, and looks like a spare tire for front right pictures suck and don't show the front passenger side much.

Hell, ask a few more questions and request some pics. Nothing comes easily and a lot of Craigslist people need to be hounded. As far as the missing SR5 trim, I wouldn't consider that a deal-breaker by any means. Just my .02

Enjoy

The only reason I said anything about the passenger side trim is the passenger side front tire looks like it is a spare so i'm not sure if it rammed into a gaurd rail or something
