Choke problem
i seem to have tracked down my idling problem to the automatic choke. it will not close. i checked the coil housing and its giving me a resitance of about 23 ohms. so i'm at a loss
Carb cleaner the heck out of the choke shaft assembly. It should work loose.

Your problem is not the choke. The choke is supposed to stay open when the engine warms up. If closing the choke on a warm engine makes it idle smoother, and it seems to run ok at throttle, then the problem lies in the fuel/air mixture jet/screw. You will need to pull its plug, back the screw out completely and clean the tip. Spray carb cleaner into the screw hole until you can see a healthy spray in the throat of the carb. Then put the screw back in, gently bottom it out, no torque, just barely bottom it out, then back off 1.5 to 2 turns. Start it up and adjust the screw for best idle.
If after doing this, you find a hesitation as you first start to accelerate, then turn the screw a 1/4 turn in or out and see if it gets better. If it doesn't, go the other way. You can go up to one more 1/4 turn in the good direction as long as the idle doesn't degrade.

the problem is not the mixture. cold, warm, on or off the choke does not close. what i did end up doing that made a huge difference was i stuck a real loose spring on the end of the lever that the fast idle hits. now it ran great for the first test drive. and is still idling much better. but still is dying when coming to a stop ONLY if i press the brakes.
Vacuum leak to the brake booster is likely. Or in it.
