Found a 4AFE!!!

Guys, the ONLY two things I've ever said I'd change aboot the mighty Terc are as follows:
1. More power
2. Paint from the moldings down to make her mint again.

A friend of my Dad's found an 89 'Rolla with 137,000 Kms on it locally. I did a search (you're welcome ) and found that this thread viewtopic.php?t=2316&highlight=4afe says 4AFEs are just over the max power/torque for Tercels.

I never drop the clutch in mine at lights, really the only thing I've ever done is wind it out to 4,500 RPM max at full throttle when shifting. Since I'm not hard on parts, should a 4AFE be okay for my car, assuming this deal goes through?? Since my Dad somehow Jedi-Mind-Tricks every car owner he buys from for a deal, and the body's done on this Corolla, this could result in potential sweetness. He wants it for parts and his '90 Corolla wagon only has like 30,000 Kms on it so he doesn't need the engine. Id' like to store it under the hood of my Tercel.

4AF would be easier, less wiring. Plus the EFI intake manifold will shove the TB into the firewall. Now I'm wondering if the dizzy will even clear the firewall. You'll need to build a header that clears the steering. I think the Tercel will handle it as long as you don't drive like an idiot. Even with the 3AC, when you drop the clutch at redline in 4WD, you're putting way more than the engine's torque through the tranny. All that energy stored in the flywheel becomes torque when the clutch engages. It's torque that breaks things. It's not like punching the throttle at the 4AFE's torque peak will rip the tranny apart. I can make that kind of torque with a 1/2" ratchet. Of course a tranny that's about to die anyway probably won't respond to the extra oomph of the 4AFE in a pleasant way.

Let me know if you want any specific pics or measurements of a 4AFE, I have one sitting on the ground right now. I also have a 1990 'Rolla FSM.

You can swap out the top parts of the engine and make it a 4AF though can't you, won't that solve a lot of the fitment problems?

You're sure it's a 4AFE? For some reason I thought the 88-89's had the 4AF, and the 90+ had the 4AFE. Maybe the change started in late 89?

Either way, it would be a nice engine in a Tercel!

It's fuel injected, doesn't that mean it's an E? I'm pretty sure that's what he said but I could be wrong. I had visions of more than adequate power dancing in my head..

Yup, the E means fuel injected. I think both have 16V and make decent power though.

Probably, but you never know what Toyota did. Right now I'm putting a California emissions 4AFE into a Federal emissions Corolla body. I was going to swap intake manifolds to get rid of the Cali-only EGR, but it looks like the heads are different too. I'd end up blowing exhaust out of the intake side of the head if I swapped manifolds. I can't understand the logic of two different heads on otherwise identical engines.

That is not so bad looking, it is just dirty. I love those evil looking duel side draft carbs! This is no longer fuel injected. Also notice the extesive changes to the fire wall (stiffening) and judging by the pics, it looks like there was a lot of other mods to the engine compartement, it does not even look like a tercel engine compartment any more. It was a normal hatch back converted to a 4wd, there would be a lot of welding on that one.

the distributer won't fit you will need to hammer the firewall back 4 to 6 inches. Don't put a f head on it is not worth the effort i know. I've done it. only mine was a 5a. same difference tho

Hmm. I'm not sure this is going to hapen now anyway after them buying a new Tercel on the weekend. I'll have to wait and see i guess. Which sucks

Yes I thought of the distributor location problem, I think cutting a hole in the fire wall would be easier. The Terc in the pics looks like there is no distributor.

I wonder how costly going to a distributor-less ignition would be, the engine sparks off of 4 small coils with a solid state triggering device. I imagine most use a crank pick-up or something, and a preprogramed black box controls the spark timing. Anyone know where such a device comes from and how costly they are? I have seen them, but I do not know where they come from.
