AL21 Build Up

Post by forehead_04 »

Ok, its spring/summer and i've been saving up $$$ and going to build up my tercel into all it can be... whatever that is - but i need some questions answered just so i can clear my mind of any doubts and get on with it... brother is now a certified mechanic so i have good help to do all this.

84 tercel dlx 5dr hatch with 3A + auto

1) Paradise Racing: Paradise Racing also has the Paradise Racing Power Pack for the Toyota 4AC and Toyota 2/3TC engines!!! It includes a Weber 32/36 Carb Kit, Schneider Cam & Dual Valve Springs. It will provide a Dyno Proven 40hp and an improved power band up to 8,000 rpms!!!

- Will this kit fit on my car?
- Weber 32/36 DGEV... right?
- Difficulty of install by mechanic
- How will this effect my engine... (powerband up to 8000rpm)

2) Auto to manual swap... 3spd auto swap to ______. What transmissions will work in my hatch... If i use a wagon trans will it work as a 5speed for me or 6. Or should i stick to the 4 speed in the hatch's. Which would work better. (top speed on speedo right now 140km if it matters)

3) What would i need to help the engine to work at its Best and get the most out of the car... (fuel filter, pump...)
- im planning on doing a full exhaust after the above is done.

Thanks everyone.... when i do all this i'll document it and post it up to return the favour for the advice...

It will fit your car.
Your idle may have to be set a little higher and may cause the automatic to creep at idle, possibly up to 20 mph.
You could look into a high stall speed converter IF one is available.
It would be easier to live with with a 4 speed manual. (I really don't care much for 5 speeds, they aren't as efficient as a 4 speed manual)
Don't change the fuel pump, do change the filter (it can't hurt), the fuel pump only puts out about 2.5 to 3 psi.
It should be easy for a mechanic to install, you could do it yourself with a little help. The hardest part would be the valve springs.

To get the most out of this, you should overhaul or rebuild your motor. The cam and carb will improve performance, but it will also stress any weak components in the engine. If your timing belt is getting close to replacement, then change it. The valve train with the dual springs will put a lot more stress on it and with this cam, the engine will become an interference engine, that is if the timing belt breaks, valves will reach out and touch pistons, and it won't be good for the valve, or the piston for that matter.

I'd do the springs if I did the cam. DGEV Weber or DGV if you don't mind a manual choke. I prefer a manual choke myself. If the stock carb works good, I'd stay with it, but if its problematic, then a Weber is certainly justified.

Why do you feel that you need that much extra power? If you really want HP, leave the Tercel alone and use it for bad weather and good gas mileage and get a Mustang GT for serious performance. If I could afford another vehicle, that is the one I'd get, good for drag racing and drifting.

5 speed manuals were used in both hatchbacks and 2WD wagons. They're easier to find than a good manual for a 4WD wagon, and they increase the gas mileage on the highway noticeably. You can't use a transmission from a 4WD wagon.
