right during the follow up of a valve job on my '87 fwd automatic, the speedometer cable quit. i say follow up because i'm trying to find the cause of a 10-15% decrease in power post job. but that's perhaps a future post. what helps me evaluate the power is the top speed flat out and the speedometer is needed for this evaluation. the cable had been complaining a bit on starting out at first in sub 25 deg farenhiet temps but ok when the engine compartment warmed up. now it's quit and toyota doesn't have any available anymore. there are no aftermarkets i can find. (there is one for the manual trans) anybody know of a source or a repair? dan byl

They probably set your ignition timing to OEM specs. My sister had one of these wagons...it had good power till she had it worked on.

Not sure about the speedo cable...they are usually a generic item. Used to be able to buy and length of it and a staking tool to form the end after cutting it to length. Use light oil only...no grease.

turns out the cable is ok but the plastic gear on the housing inserted into the transmission was shredded for about 5 or 6 teeth. toyota has 3 in the usa and they are sending me one for about $35. the speedo made a screeching sound at highway speed when under 25 degrees f. and stopped once the engine compartment warmed up. the speedo continued to operate normally. this went on over two winters. when i pulled the cable out of the sheath it was oily. i think they should be dry lubed. i'm thinking the screech came from very non viscous lube and if i clean and graphite lube the cable the new plastic gear should stay intact.
i'm wondering what ignition timing setting takza would recommend. i have it set per shop manual to 5 deg btdc, vacuum lines off and plugged. anyone have any numbers to suggest to try?

!!! I better order the other 2! lol. Like when I asked my parts counter about the rear springs... "Hold on, let me check... Wow. You're not going to believe this. There is ONE spring left in Wisconsin... You still want it?" 1 spring is better luck than some have had in that arena...

I wouldn't think that little gear would be an easy thing to come by either unless its a carryover from another box...

Already mentioned this about 6 months ago, but my dealer said they had no TOYOTA decals for the rear hatch on the continent. They were going to order me one if I wanted, for the low low price of only $120 or something obscene. I declined. We traced the one Dad bought 5 years ago for his Terc and it cost me 10 bucks at a local graphics store to have it made up. From one inch or more away you can't tell the difference. I had no trouble getting aftermarket fenders though, so is it just some Toyota made parts that are getting hard to get?

A local auto parts store I guess, it's a chain but I don't think it's outside of the Maritime Provinces. But they must have a supplier that anyone can get to I'd guess.

They weren't a perect fit but were pretty good. The gap bewteen the hood and tops of them isn't as small as before but they went on straight and everything. A big step up from the ones that were on there. They looked like someone fixed them with nothing but body fill and a shovel to put it on with.
