Number 3 piston from my old engine

Post by Mac »

this looks interesting....

and i don't think all the sea foam in the world could take this carbon off, keep in mind this piston has already been soaked for 2 days in solvent and then promptly scrubbed with various pads/wire brushes and chipped at. in the darker areas its about 1-2MM thick and ROCK HARD

I think it may have been those 8000RPM shifts one wild night that caused the cracking...

Bottom pics a lil dark..

Wow. Good thing it didn't get worse, eh?

I dunno... I boiled my old exhaust valves in Simple Green for 20 min and they came out shiny. No intent of reusing them though.

yikes! It would be interesting to have it analyzed to find out what caused failure. But wow, so that's what happens when you drive it to hard then.

Just after I bought my Tercel (in the process of being sold, btw) it cracked a piston.
When we removed all 4, we found cracking in precisely the same spot. One had cracked all the way through, causing a bit of damage to the block. The other three were cracks on the order of 1/2 to 3/4 inch long.

This was just after I had problems with the cooling system and I think the engine got a little hot. I'm sure the carbon wedges them open, and I reckon your guess about the 8k rpm shifts was spot on.
