Are these CV's to far gone (from visual inspection)?

Need a car part and don't know where to get it or how to install it. Look here!

Are these CV's to far gone (from visual inspection)?

Post by Mattel »

I got the clunks in mine and am wondering is these secondhandy's are worth the pain of putting in as they have surface rust (so the vendor says). Is it worth the effort? my car although only done about 190,000 kms it has a replacement set on and It also doesn't sound like reconditioned cv's are very good from what I hear from you fella's stateside.

If I go and have a look at them can I tell just by rotating them by hand wether they are any good or not?

These however are so cheap but as I have not replaced any CV's before i'm wondering if it is worth trying to find some better ones? how long does the replacement process take? I know there are some write up's here and will go through them. Cheers again guys! Matt

Is the part that goes into the transmission rusty too? I wouldn't use them if it is. Other than that they look OK for the price. You would want to wire brush the rust off of the outer parts to make them easier to install. Changing CV axles is easy.

I'm not sure how well you can judge them by feel. They shouldn't have any slop and should move smoothly.

You might want to soak the boots with some kind of silicone stuff like Armor All to make them last longer.

Those rusty ends can't be much worse than the over-tumbled axle I got from Cordone.

Might want to ask about where the seals ride...condition. Boots also.

If you're lucky...they might be OEM axles with low miles....not rebuilt.

I'd just use steel wool to clean them up on the ends...then hit 'em with grease.

I'd just work on getting them at a good price...then check out the boots and if OK...put them in.

If they are OEM in good condition...you've got a find.

By the time you do CVs and boots...you might as well buy rebuilt axles?

Just an opinion....
