VALVE Clearances

How do you know it's time to do the valve clearances. While my car is idling I can hear a distinct ticking. Car runs perfect though.
On my VW engine as soon as the valve clearances are off you notice it right away in performance.

as soon as they sound as a sewing machine, thats how i do it

It's pretty easy to remove the valve cover, and follow the factory repair manual using a feeler guage to measure the clearance. This is the surest way to check. No guess work here.

You can use some vac hose as a stehoscope to see if that ticking comes from the fuel pump.

But if they haven't been done...it's a good thing to do...IF you do them right.

I wouldn't wait for winter...things cool down too fast.

The big thing when doing them is the thing HAS to stay hot.
If you heard my engine clip.... My clearances were done not too long ago. It was cool out, and everything chilled too far down too quickly. Never bothered with it this summer. Likely should have.
