I advanced the cam timing by one tooth (9*) and the car ran like the ignition timing was way retarded. The only good thing about this was that I saw the belt had oil on it and so I replaced it and sealed up where the oil was getting to it.

Did you try retarding the cam?
In theory, advancing should better yours low end and retarding your high right?

That was 9° on the cam gear? That's 18° on the crank, which is how timing is usually measured. Way too much to see any positive results. Try 1° on the cam.

Did you also reset the ignition timing when playing with the cam timing?

I think the issue with doing 1 degree is we need adjustable gears. The only thing we can do is moving it a tooth on the belt at a time I believe.

I'd read a couple of places about good results advancing one tooth...I did move the dist back and forth with no good results....but didn't pull it out and rotate it any. Maybe I should have?

Doesn't hurt to try, but I still don't know if you'll see anything good from advancing it a whole tooth. How is the cam gear held from turning on these engines? I can't remember. I know on Suzukis you can drill a new hole for the locating pin. And on Hondas you can have an offset key made. There must be some low-budget way to experiment with the cam timing.

Its a pin and a slot in the gear. You could drill a new hole relative to any tooth...gotta be exact though.

With one gear I know of...a guy drilled several holes to allow various settings.

Guess he used an "indexer" on a mill?

Think if you advance the cam...the dist timing will be retarded? I thought I had enough dist adjustment to overcome this. Might not have....

Sounds right considering it's gear-driven. Do you have a timing light?

I don't use them much either, but it should tell you if you're getting the ignition timing anywhere close to where it should be. And also if advancing the cam advances or retards the ignition timing.

I thought I had enough dist advance left to make up for the 9* rotation of the cam....probably should have stayed with it.
