Oil, carbon, blowby, oh my!

Post by Typrus »

Well, while removing my cat to check for plugging, I found many "fun" things.
Inside of the kitty was partially melted media, a black coating on the housing, and a big ole hole clean through. I suspect it was punched through at some time in the past.It looks too clean to be a melt.
Inside the downtube was a thick carbon coating. Yummy. Even at the tip is some loverly carbon.
While running with just the cat and downtube, I removed the air filter cleaner top.... AND THERE WAS A PUDDLE OF OIL INSIDE!!!! Where in the hell did it come from? I don't know. The crank vent in the housing was sucking, not blowing when I idled and revved. How is the oil getting there if not from the crank vent? Not like it was a drop or two either, it was a good bit!
Then there is the excessively low compression.... Connected? Likely...

I left the cat-back disconnected for now. Its a quite obnoxious drone, but I want to see if mileage is affected.

So what am I looking at?

Late last summer, I pulled the car onto the carport for the night, then not long afterwards, noticed oil practically pouring out from under the right front corner of the hood.....I had no clue where it would have been coming from. Well, like yours, my air filter was full of oil, so much so that it was running out the air intake up next to the radiator. My car is still using quite a bit of oil, I'd say a quart every 700-1000 miles, maybe more, as I usually have to add oil a couple of times between changes. Sometimes I think I will just quit changing the oil, as it seems the car is doing that by itself ....

Anyway, the oil consumption has slowed a bit from those first couple of weeks after I noticed that horrendous leak ( did i spell that right ?), but I get big puffs of bluish smoke at times when I'm really getting my foot into it, or when I've been sitting at a stoplight and then take off again.

Make sure your PCV hoses are put on right? It pulls air from inside the air cleaner into the valve cover...then out of the valve cover thru the valve and into the intake.

The only way I can see that you'd have oil in the air cleaner is that the valve isn't working...the hoses are pulling the wrong way or are blocked....or you've got way to much blowby?

Make a PCV jar? Easy way is to use low pressure fuel line...punch some snug fitting holes in the lid...run a hose down thru the middle to the bottom...surrounded by a couple of copper scubbers...one out from the top to the side. This is plumbed in AFTER the PCV valve. I put mine behind the radiator on the pass side.

If you are talking about the PCV jar...looks just like it does in the link...except I use a tapered punch to put 2 snug holes in the lid...forcing the fuel lines into the jar.

PCV gas goes down the center tube...past the scrubbers...out the side hose at top.

I suspended it under the air intake tube right behind the rad in a kind of wire cage made out of coat hanger wire...held up thru a lot of offroad stuff.

Cost? Pretty much what the 2 scrubbers cost...plus the pickles or ????
