Shifter Issues
I have a 83 tercel sr5. The shifter is stuck in neutral and im not sure why it would be. I have been told it was something to do with bushings and the linkage but im not sure were to find them to check them. and the shfter wont even move its like its stuck.
Remove the inside shifter covers, plastic etc and check for dirt or corrosion in the shift fork area. if the seal is missing or cracked they can fill with water and dirt and stop shifting
Anyone want to fill me in on how to get pics to show? just cut and paste to your browser and there are 2 pics of the tranny shift fork area

Shifter Issues
Ok your pics didnt work there not at the location you mintioned i just got an invalit page error, Second is the tranny shift fork area in side the tranmission and if so can i get to it without takeing the tranmission out. because as it sits there are 5 bolts and there are only 4 that it seems like i can get to without takeing out the trany.
Real possible that the rubber boot on top the trans and around the lever is split....so you could find the split and use a basting syringe to put about 1/4-1/2 cup of gear oil thru the split. This is the easy way.
Think you have to remove only the front 4 bolts to get the boot off...I'd soak them in penetrant first...they will snap.
Remove the circular clip...pulll the lever out...might have rust...water...grit???? Clean out what you can...add 1/2 cup gear oil...you might luck out.

Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

re shifter
well it looks really rusted but im not sure what the name of this part is that I will need to replace can you please tell me the name of the part

take a screwdriver and scrape out all the rust and corrosion . then fill it with gear oil, sand or wire wheel the shifter clean, put it back togather and try shifting. no problems if it shifts you are set to go. may have to work it a bit.

ill try that also what caused it to get rusted like that is there a gasket missing or something also were can i get some kind of diagram that would show me what the shifter compartment is supposed to look like so i can make sure there is nothing is damaged or missing. and what causeed the shifter to get this back i know water did but how did water get in there.
BTW I am so glad I found this site im not car smart but i love learning how to fix me cars. and alittle push is the right direction is really great

Re: shifter
i'm not sure where your at on this but if you remove the shifter the compartment under it will have a shaft about 3/4" in diameter that goes into the tranny. it is probably rusted up and binding. squirt some penetrating oil on it and work it out so you can sand the rust off. it does not come out very far.comrepair323 wrote:while i cast cleaning it out i found this in the shifter compartment and wanted to know if you had any idea what it was and if it was important. it feels like its platic or rubber.
lube it up and work it in and out till it moves well
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Have you downloaded the service manual from this site? It has a disassembly of the Transmission in it.

according to it, that pan shaped piece is the "select lever housing".

Gear Oil
Curiouse qustion I never check the oil level in the transmission yet gunna when the wind stops here but would that stop the car from shifting. I would think so but i am not sure and i dont want to take the transmission out not yet at least until i get a better place to work on it. also were can i get ramps it would make working on the car much easier.
