Input shaft gear/idler gear failure

Post by rkdoty »

Anyone have insight on a failure like this? Input shaft gear & idler gear. This is an old transmission that came with an 85 4wd I recently bought. I think the same thing is happening with the replacement transmission as well

Ran low on oil is my guess. That part sits at the highest point in the trans so it's the first to be affected by low gear oil. Others here have more experience with this than I do though so we'll see what they say.

classic low oil failure. transmission is officially junk, and can only be used for parts.

was there a bearing on the end of the input shaft when you removed it?

This was the old transmission. The input shaft was already out, so I don’t know the condition of the pilot bearing that was on it—assuming there was one

rk,

Keegan was asking about the large bearing that sits on the back end (behind the gear) of the input shaft, not the pilot bearing.

Gotcha. Like I said this one (trans) came with the car and was already out. There was no bearing on the rear of the input shaft

Synchros if they have some life left (gap of 1/32" or more) are worth saving. Not much else inside is worth saving except shift forks, if not overly worn, and the sliders that the shift forks move if they are not banged up on front and back edges.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
