Top Gun vs Bosch plug leads

Post by Lateer »

Well, during the recent hassles with ignition with my Tercel, I replaced the Top Gun spark plug leads on the car with the standard Bosch set. The Top Gun set had resistances of between 5.2 kohm for the longest and 4 kohm for the shortest. They'd also been on the car since I'd bought it. The Bosch set had resistances of 2.8 kohm for the longest and 2 kohm for the shortest.

It turned out that the leads wern't the problem, but now the Tercel doesn't seem to have the punch it used to.

Does anyone know of a decent comparison between Top Gun and Bosch? And I'm not talking about something heard from a mate who heard it from a mate ad infinitem. Electrically, the lesser resistance in the lead, the more current it can carry and the more voltage you get across the spark plug, therefore a better spark. Both leads are 8mm, so diameter isn't the problem.

If it turns out the Top Gun are better, I'll put them back on the car. If it turns out the Bosch are better, they'll stay.

Personally, I have heard from a mechanic and a feller that races Toyotas that the Top Gun leads are very good.

P.S. I'll be putting my new panelbeating skills to use cutting *all* the rust out of the Tercel. I did a basic panelbeating course through Adult Education here in Tasmania. I thoroughly reccomend them for anyone who's thinking about doing some amateur panelbeating. No. Seriously. I've learnt heaps. :D

Did you gap the spark plugs before putting them in?

Yup.

I even went and bought a new set of feeler gauges so I could do plugs, tappets and stuff.

Give it some break-in time. Re-gapping and all that changes a few characteristics, and based on a hunch, it may need a few hundred miles break-in time. Or I'm a silly person.
I think it'd be wise to have all the leads the same length... Thats just me.

You don't say what kind of plugs. A lot of people like the Bosch spiral wound wires...less resistance is better...if you don't have radio static?

I indexed the NGK plugs on mine and reduced the gap to around .033". Runs just fine...haven't been able to test mpg.

I use some NAPA wires.

I *did* have NGK BPR5EY-11 plugs in it, however when the mechanic played with it he changed them for another plug and I haven't had a look to see what sort as yet.

And no, radio static isn't a problem. I was just seeing as to whether or not anyone knew definitively which was better out of Top Gun and Bosch leads.
