Charge light and brake light on

Post by elitesrock2 »

So while driving my tercel around I noticed my charge light popped on along with the brake light. So when i got home I found that my top wire for my alternator was no longer connected so i put it back on and the lights are still on. the alternator is charging though. but my radio has begun cutting out at any rpm other than idle. and my wire to my choke is not getting any power. I have a light bar going to the radio fuse. but the light bar is functional

usually that means you are not charging. check voltage across battery when running, should be about 14-15 volts, and 13.2 when engine is off. quick test is to turn on headlights with engine off (works best at night), than start engine and the lights should get noticeably brighter, means alternator is working.

You could have either internal or external voltage regulator on the alternator, if it is external you need to test both the voltage regulator and alternator separately. if internal you need to either rebuild the the alternator or replace it.

Light from the alternator idiot light bleeds over into the brake indicator light so it looks like both are on.

On 80's Toyota's, Toyota built a diode and resistor into the charge light circuit to cause both brake and charge lights to illuminate when the alternator is faulty. Most auto parts stores will test your alternator for free. The most common problem with a worn alternator is worn brushes. They can be purchased for about $5.
