Cylinder One Missing at idle

Post by mrdance123 »

#1 cylinder misfiring at idle,
pulling #1 wire makes no difference, so it's a steady miss.
It fires and runs drives normally with slightly higher RPMs.

The only cure I have found is weird,
I pulled the vacuum line (and plugged it) from the TVSV port K
the second from the bottom on the TVSV,
the vacuum source of this line comes from the gas filter,
which happens to be on CYLINDER ONE manifold arm.
Cylinder #1 restored to normal operation and smooth idle.

I have kept this vacuum line from the gas filter plugged for years now.
I've changed plugs, wires and the dist. cap... no help.
Hard to believe there's enough vacuum loss through the gas filter.

Maybe the tvsv is bad. Test per FSM
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I used to have a bad TVSV, but putting in good one did not help the cylinder#1 idle miss.
Don't see that it runs any better, overall, with the working unit.
I've done the cool and hot tests, the replacement TVSV is fine on those.
The air flow changed in various ports as expected by the book.
Out of 6 wrecking yard TVSV's I have pulled, only 1 was good :(

Have you checked the AAP diaph? If ruptured, raw fuel is dumped into #1 intake runner by way of the TVSV and gas filter. Easy to check, just disconnect and plug the vac. line to the AAP. Bet it cures your problem.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

I bet you're right, rer233, thanks!
The extra fuel would be just enough to flood #1 cylinder, and only at idle.
Next time I visit Dad, I'll check it out, he has the car.
Will update with results.
Looking at the diagram,
I was wondering if check valve from TVSV to EGR could be ruptured,
but your suggestion makes more sense to me.
