Weber jet question

Post by xirdneh »

i picked up a tercel with a Weber 32/36 DGEV carb
i have never messed with a weber
gas mileage is around 23mpg
exhaust pipe is pretty black so i am thinking it may be running rich
i would like to change the jets to see if mileage can be improved
what jet kit or size do i need for standard 3ac engine?

I had one Tercel with the weber that got similar poor fuel economy, I swapped out jets to match what others found work well in the tercel. Typically the weber is set up for larger engines and will be too rich for our use.

There is an extensive weber carb thread on this forum where members share what jets they use, there are several that need to be changed out: a low speed, a high speed, and also "air emulsion tubes" that can also be changed out. they are easy to swap out, they are right under an external cover plate on top of the carb.

You can get jet kits on-line, not too costly, and than what I did was try to match the best combo of jets based on what other forum members found out. If I had time I would have further refined it by experimenting with a size up and down on each. but it was running good and I sold it before I had time to experiment.

after reading previous Weber related posts i have decided these are the jets i need for 32/36 DGEV carb on a 3AC engine
Main fuel primary 140
" " secondary 150
Air primary 160
Air secondary 170
Idle primary 55
idle secondary 50
i am assuming all of these jets have numbers stamped on them

I removed all 6 jets from the carb and this is what it had
Main fuel primary 140
" " secondary 140
Air primary 170
Air secondary 160
Idle primary 60
idle secondary 50
i plan to swap places with the air primary (160) and air secondary (170)
meanwhile i will order a main 135 and idle primary 55 from Redline or whatever online

I requested info from Pegasus website asking what they thought of this combination of jets on 32/36 carb
Main fuel primary 140 secondary 140
Air primary 170 Air secondary 160
Idle primary 60 idle secondary 50
reply
"Those jet sizes look quite reasonable. The first thing to check on the DGV carburetor is the float level. A float level that is too high will cause the car to run much too rich regardless of the jet sizes. If the car ran well previously, you might have a broken or leaking float. A broken float will make the engine instantly change one day from lean to rich. A leaking float can take several days or even weeks, depending on the severity of the leak."

strange thing is with jet size, going too lean (small) supply jets can also result in reduced fuel economy, as well as too large (too rich).

so there is always a "sweet spot" where the fuel/air ratio is just right, runs strong, and deliverers the best economy.

From what I have found researching online the idea is to keep dropping MAIN jet size until sputtering occurs then go back up a size. The AIR jets only kick in when RPMs go over 3000

Started with this combo and got 23mpg while running poorly
Main fuel primary 140 secondary 140
Air primary 170 Air secondary 160
Idle primary 60 idle secondary 50
Then tried this combo and got 25mpg while running much better
Main fuel primary 130 secondary 135
Air primary 160 Air secondary 170
Idle primary 60 idle secondary 50
Currently trying this combo which runs quite well and got just a bit under 27mpg
Main fuel primary 125 secondary 130
Air primary 160 Air secondary 170
Idle primary 55 idle secondary 50

One problem I have had throughout this process is hard re-starting when engine is hot
I have to floor the pedal to get it to start
If car sits about 40 minutes it will start without this problem

may be the ethanol blend causing the warm restart issue, vapor lock. try and put a heat shield under the carb, and around the fuel lines and fuel pump and regulator.

I've had the Weber since 2008, with whatever jets the vendor sent (I told them of StL's elevation and my driving habits, but candidly dunno if it made any changes in jetting).
ANYway, I've had no problem, save on warm restarts it takes perhaps another 5 seconds of grinding to start - Big Whoop.
If I do not drive the car for a few days, whether Winter or Summer, it might take 15 seconds to start - to which I attribute, whether rightly or wrongly, to the fuel draining from the float bowl. Again - Big Whoop.

Research online about hard hot engine starting with weber. One site recommended pressing pedal 1/3 of the way down then crank it over. That worked every time today but it was not a real hot day.
