1984 Tercel AWD, near rust free car, San Diego

This forum is for cars that run, or at least are close to running. This isn't for parting out complete cars.

1984 Tercel AWD, near rust free car, San Diego

Post by bowtied »

Help. I need to sell this before I fall deeper for this little Tercel. It’s an attraction I can’t explain and I’m afraid I’ll be a senior member of this forum in twenty years… gasp… I’ve got Tercel fever!

Okay, so I came across this Tercel and somehow purchased it, tho I couldn't explain it... I didn't need it, I knew I was overpaying for it but bought it anyway cause it chose me. I immediately took it to a shop (I am too busy) and told them to addressed the front end ‘clunks’. After new Moog tie rods and an alignment... front end is now tight and car runs, drives and stops A1.

Have since detailed the interior, installed new floor mats, and even installed new shifter boots. I’m just giving the car love cause I have to. I have checked everything (and I mean everything) out on this car to make sure it all works. Fan (all speeds), wipers /washers front and back, lights, etc. Even took apart the dash just to lubricate the temp selection slide, same for front windows mechanisms. Figured out how to unlock the Inclinometer, replaced spark plugs and gas filter and tracked down every vacuum leak too. The car is just so damn simple to work on, it’s almost fun. I’m going to change the oil and filter today. Please stop me before I repaint the black trim around the windows and start shopping paint/wheels/and a divorce attorney. What the hell has gotten into me?

Anyway, I have too many vehicles and don’t any need more distractions (no kidding) so I’m looking to find it a good home before I start getting powder coating quotes for the frame. This car really needs nothing to be reliable and can be driven anywhere. Please feel free to make a good offer but consider this is a clean, ready to go driver, not a lump of rust needing a parts chase and three weeks of work. Thanks.

Car details:

Purchased new in San Diego @ Rose Toyota
Stick with UL 4x4
4x4 works great
Car Runs and Drives A1
AC blows very cold
Everything Works on car
Very minimal oxidation (Will highlight in pics)
Light blue/ Blue interior

Hoping to post a few pictures, first timer, so we'll see.

I hit the submit button during post, meant to post a few pics...

Car has a salvage from 2008. Wasn't registered for a few years and was cheaper to get a salvage title than pay $1000+ in back reg fees (good ol CA)
Just over 300K miles on the clock. Unknown if motor has been rebuilt. Starts and runs great, no smoke (black, blue or white), does not leak fluids.
Head looks to have been redone at least once. Recently replaced old plugs, all cylinders burning clean. Sorry, trying to figure out pics. Please pm me and will send

welcome to the forum bowtied,

that is a really clean looking tercel4wd! good price presuming everything is in working condition.

These cars have a way of winding themselves around your emotions, there are many on this forum that have owned 4 or 5 or 6 or more.

These cars are real popular in the Puget Sound area, I have brought several up from California to sell locally. If you have no luck, I will be traveling to your area in June, I could fly down and than drive it back and find a home for it here.

Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome Petros... been lurking since I bought mine and know way too much about these cars. Such a great site with boundless information.

June??... it may have a fuel injected small block and 33" mudders by then. lol I wish, would be a hoot, but probably not as reliable.

That is a real sweet looking car. You shouldn't have any trouble selling it.

Bump.

This is a super clean little machine. Needs almost nothing (OK..so I noticed this eve the license plate light is out and interior light lens cover is MIA. Call the junkman).

Interior is close to spotless and I've since reshot the black trim around the windows cause cause it bothered me and ordered a 4th wheel center. Save for the few bubbles around the windshield and peeling clear coat...this is a very clean Tercel4x4. A good paint job and it would be a very beautiful car top to bottom.

To date, ive only had Craig's low balls, but no one has made the time to see it. Will be making eBay run if doesn't sell soon. I can't over-stress... this is as nice as you might find in this price range and more anywhere. I cruise on the freeways at 75, not a care in the world and AC blowing. Fluids are clean and ready to take you on an adventure.

Honestly, it blows me away. In a world of 50k muscle cars, no one can spit $2500 for a fine example for a car with a complete forum dedicated to it. Everyone seems to go goo-goo for filthy, ragged, $600 rusted POS that need everything. You'll be $$$ in the hole and weeks of your life to get even close to this point.
Im not about making money on this car. I just refuse to lose a nickel for giving an iconic car the love it deserves and the world an opportunity to own it.

That is a sweet looking car. Have you been in contact with forum member bryan thompson who lives in San Diego as well? he has two wagons now and knows a lot of people who are into old Japanese cars.

Unfortunately in the Tercel market you just have to wait for the right buyer to come along. Though personally, I'd keep it.

maybe I missed it, but how many miles are on the car, and the engine (if different)?

btw, our travel plans are changing, we might be driving from Texas to California in mid April. I will consider picking it up from you for cash if you can wait another 3-4 weeks.

I can do that...i'm not sweating the $$. I'm more just surprised it hasn't flown the coupe.
Just called my insurance and qualifies for classic "chrome" policy. $47 every six months for full coverage (@ 5k value) AND lowers the rates on my other classic cars by 35% by having a third policy. Going to be cheaper overall insuring another car. So now it's saving me money. Go figure.

Sorry Petros..didn't see your previous questions.

Car has 300k on the clock. I have no idea if/when the engine has been replaced, it runs very nicely tho. A light hesitation under part throttle disappears after warms up. I havent another to comoare with but feels pretty strong for 68(?) HP and gets up to 80 very readily.
It was a recent purchase as noted. The car shows to have been cared for well in its life. Recently did plugs and wires. Plugs had considerable miles but other than normal wear, looked very good.
