Wiper linkage repair

Post by johnvincent »

Last year I replaced a broken wiper linkage assembly on my 1983 DLX but almost immediately after, the bushing failed.

Does anyone have any creative suggestions for how to fix this? There's an older post in this forum about this same issue.

Anyone care to offer an alternative?

you can either fabricate your own tie rod using heim joints or tie rod ends like the one below, or take the existing one and modify/weld it or what ever it takes to use one of those kind of tie rode ends. they only cost about $1.50 to $2.00 each (plus shipping), and will result in a permanent repair. find the kind with Delrin or Teflon busing in them so they do not require lubrication. there are all metals ones too (uses a bronze bush on a stainless ball) but they have a lot of friction until they get a little wear in them, and they cost more too.

We used to use things like this when we built race cars, fabricate everything from raw stock and off the shelf bushing and bearings.

the factor set up creates a similar kind of joint, but it is much lower cost than these kind of full on spherical bearings and rod ends. I am actually surprised that flimsy factory plastic bushing holds up as well as it does.
