!984 Toyota Tercel 4wd DXL Automatic

Post by Buzzard67 »

Hi everyone,

I will be doing some general winter maintenance to my car before it gets any colder here in MN.
I need some advice. Car sputters ( runs on ) when parked and turn the car off.
Here is what I have done.
1 New plugs and wires
2 Bottle of " Lucas " carburetor cleaner in gas tank.
3 Changed all the fluids : new oil, new antifreeze , new trany fluid and flush.
4 using mid grade gas Oct 91.

I would like to do the timing myself but don't Know what mark to set it at. Any pictures would help.
I would also like any advise about either rebuilding the carburetor or buying a new aftermarket Carb. Any thoughts ?

Thanks for any help

It's called "dieseling" if your car continues to run after being shut off. You may be using poor fuel or the combustion chambers may be too hot due to carbon deposits (which increase the compression by basically making the combustion chambers small enough to get hotter).

If you wanted, you could pull the head off and clean the combustion chambers and piston tops, this will lower the compression if that's the main problem. Also, get "top tier" fuel, as it has more than the bare minimum mandatory detergents. On my Pontiac Vibe, when I overhauled the engine I could see how clean top tier keeps the intake valves and combustion chambers. I believe that if you make the switch, if you don't already, this problem won't develop again or will at least slow down.

That's a list of top tier station chains.
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?

do not remove the head to remove carbon build up, there are easier ways to reduce carbon build up without removing the head. Usually carbon build up by it self will not cause the run-on.

first check the spark timing and check you are not running too lean or too rich, check spark plugs are correct range and not fouled or carboned up. a common sourse of too rich mixutre is a leaky AAP (auxiliary acceleration pump). find it in the carb or vac diagram and than pull the vacuum line to it after you run it. If it is wet with fuel in the vac line, than you need a new AAP. A good temp fix is to cap off both ends (it is only needed for cold running, after it warms up it does nothing).

good luck.

How long does it diesel for when you turn the car off?

Mine does for a second or two and I've just labeled it a quirk of a bad carb.
