1986 T4 front hub needed. Please oh please!!

Post by Killemalltrac »

I just got my bearing pressed in and was all ready to get the hub in and it's all screwed up. I need a new one. or a couple since I think the passenger side is damaged as well. If you have one or 2 or 4 or any hubs for these lovable little machines please drop me a line. I am so close to reviving one of these its silly. PM or text if you feel so inclined 5412o6302eight. I am in Eugene Oregon.

Its too short to be pressed into the knuckle. Not really sure why but when you set it into the knuckle with the new bearing and everything it goes in all the way (til it stops against the bearing) and is still sort of loose.

"sort of loose" how is that possible? sounds like perhaps you have the wrong size bearing. Can you post pictures?

it is easy to damage the bearings and seals installing them, but not usually the hub assembly. if you pulled the hub off the car, likely it is okay, you just need the proper bearings.

also, the left and right side steering knuckle assembly are not the same, you need the driver's side? or one of each? It is not normal to damage the hub when replacing the bearings.

agreed with petros, you probably got the wrong bearing. someone else had this issue lately, i guess a few manufacturers have different sizes but only one is correct. here is that thread.

probably easiest to press that bad bearing out install the correct ones, unless something happened to your steering knuckles.

I'm going to go pick it all up and take a bunch of pictures to get this figured out. The reason I am doing all of this is because the stub snapped off of the axle and the car was still driven until the wheel fell off. That is why it seemed likely to me that it was messed up or sheared off or something. Stay tuned!!

Ok so if you look closely you can see that the outer bore of the hub is worn. It creates a ridge and when you hold the bearing race on it the bore is too small to fill the bearing. The width of the bearings Marc up to the old ones. It's just that the car was driven too long with a bad bearing causing it to machine this ridge into it.

that should be a smooth shaft surface. looks like it was damaged from driving on it, as you suspect. IT can be machined smooth and sleeved to the right size, but likely getting one from a wrecking yard, or from someones used parts inventory, would be cheaper (I will look tonight).
