Just Wondering
Howdy folks!
I'm replacing the radiator and hoses in my car, and noticed a leak (look at photo). I was wondering if the leak is part of the water pump, or the leak is from a separate part. The hose in the photo is the top hose coming from the radiator, while looking down toward the water pump.

Re: Just Wondering
Might be the orings on the bypass tube. That's the small tube going from the outlet to the inlet. The coolant is pooling in where the bypass tube connects to the inlet.

Re: Just Wondering
that is not part of the water pump. it is a separate water outlet from the head, two 12mm bolts remove it. You will need a new gasket, as well as the o-rings on the by-pass tube to stop the leak. This is a common place to leak (the o-rings get dried out and crack).
auto parts store should have both gasket and o-ring. You can use form-a-gasket on the outlet fitting instead of a gasket, but use care to put a nice eave coat on the mating surface (after you clean all of the old gasket off of both sides), and snug tighten bolts (do not over-tighten, it could warp the housing and cause a leak).
I like to lubricate the new o-rings with form-a-gasket to prevent damage when installing it back on the car.
It is an easy fix, just be careful when doing the work, clean all the parts before assembly, and check for leaks when you are done.

Re: Just Wondering
Two o rings ?I just replaced mine and after much head scratching finally found where one went .I couldn't find it because the o ring was completely flush /flat with the metal component it fits into .I could find no other such slot for the equally sized ring the kit came with .

Re: Just Wondering
the short tube has groove for "o" ring on both ends, symetrical
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Just Wondering
okay well the kit that I got had two larger rings and no small ones .I just used rtv sealant on the tube the seems to be working.but still have I still have a one of the two rings left because I only found one place for one of the large o rings.it seems to be working thus so far .
BUT! LIKE CLOCKWORK ,EVERY FRICKIN TIME ,AS IF THE INFERNAL CONTRAPTION HAS A REPAIR INDICATOR THAT SENSES A NEW REPAIR ,WHICH SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE SWITCH THAT CONTROLS MALFUNCTION ,HAS DECIDED TO MAKE MY COOLANT DISAPPEAR BUT LEAVES NO TELL TALE SIGNS OF ESCAPE .
I'M GONNA ROLL THE DICE AND SAY ........MMMMMMM.HEAD GASKET FOR 500$ ALEX .........DAILY DOUBLE !!!!
HERE IS THE QUESTION FOR 1000$
MY NAME IS THE COOLING SYSTEM I HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE TASK OF MAKING YOUR TERCEL EXPERIENCE A FRUSTRATING ONE .AND IT SEEMS ALONG WITH MISSING COOLANT ,MY FAN WILL NOT TURN ON.
THE FAN ITSELF WORKS BIT WHEN THE SWITCH ON LOWER PART OF RAD IS UNPLUGGED INSTEAD OF CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING I GET NOTHING .FUSES =GOOD .FAN HAS B3N TESTED =good . What is the course of action one would have to embark on to fix me .?

Re: Just Wondering
please do not use all caps, it is hard to read.
you need a fan sensor, the item in the bottom of the radiator that the fan wire plugs into. If the fan runs when you unplug it there, that means the sensor is no good. But first make sure it is hot enough for it to turning on, I notice in my car the fan does not switch on until the temp gets to about the top of the thermometer graphic on the temp gauge. It is possible the heater by itself cools the engine enough not to need the fan to come on.
Also, if the car is moving 20 mph or more, there is more than enough natural airflow to keep the engine cool, and the fan would not come on. The fan only comes on during prolonged periods of idling when it is not moving at all, or in heavy traffic on a hot day. In most driving conditions it will not come on at all.
The cooling system is relatively simple, if all of the parts are working it should keep the car cool. If you are losing coolant and can not find a leak, good chance the head gasket is compromised. If it was overheated, most likely the head gasket is bad and allowing coolant to seep into the one or two cylinders. If not too bad it will run okay, and will not show up in a compression test, but if you can smell antifreeze in the exhaust, no obvious external loss of coolant, and particularly if the the top of the piston in cylinders one and/or two appears "clean" (little to no carbon deposits, as can be seen through the spark plug hole with a flash light when the piston is at the top of the stroke), head gasket is seeping coolant. As long as you can keep it topped up it will not harm it to drive it, but it will eventually blow out all at once and it may not run at all. Once I kept driving mine until all of a sudden, I had zero compression in both #1 and #2 cylinders (only barely running on two cylinders, could not drive it at all). fortunately I was not too far from home so I was able to pull it to my driveway.
Changing a head gasket is a big job, but not too costly, and if you plan properly, you can get it all done in one day. See my thread on head gasket replacement over in the repair guides section.
But before you pull it apart, confirm the head gasket is indeed bad.
good luck.

Re: Just Wondering
Sorry about the caps .
Here we go.......
Got a new sensor still no improvment .
In prior tests when I unplugged the switch from the sensor ' the fan would run nonstop.it does not do that now so new sensor is in the fan works I hooked it straight to battery temp gauge works .what else is there

Re: Just Wondering
this is a bit confusing: are you saying that the fan does not come on when you unplug it from the sensor in the bottom of the radiator? And it did run before?gnarnold wrote:In prior tests when I unplugged the switch from the sensor ' the fan would run nonstop.it does not do that now so new sensor is in the fan works I hooked it straight to battery temp gauge works .
Something changed since the last test. check if you have 12 volts to the fan, might be a fuse or a grounded and/or disconnected power supply wire.

Make sure you are getting power to the actual fan connector too (behind the grill). It may have a broken wire/bad ground/bad fuse or something along those lines that you may have missed.

Re: Just Wondering
There should also be a fan relay in the box near the battery. Maybe that's defective.
