a machine shop in cortez did the rebuild. crank was polished, head reworked, rods reconditioned and pistons swapped out along with all new bearings. new timing belt.
Now remember this is new mexico, where tercels are rare and 4A's even rarer, but still...

The problem is you do not know how good a job they did, if they are reputable or not. You can do a complete overhaul, with all new internal parts and machine shop work on a 3a or 4 a engine for about $700-800 I suspect. But than you know what was in it. If it was a top notch job, and they give you a warranty, it might be worth $900 or so. But as you can see, for a good running engine of unverifiable quality, it seems $500 is the going price.
Even the imported engines, low miles but used, and came with a warranty, when they were available, were delivered to your house for $400. Can not get them anymore.
