Radiators that will fit in T4 with limited mods???

Post by robf »

I have searched the forums. I haven't found anything definitive.

I saw that a hyundi excell, and maybe a a mid 90's corolla May work. Nothing else. I do not mind spending the 100 for a new one. That said I am cheap.

I was going to go to a junkyard I frequent with a tape measure and calipers. Thought I would ask here to save time. Any help is appreciated.

You can take a lesson from the hot rod guys, and you can make anything work, or even make your own! key would be over all dimensions so it fits within the space, and the location of inlet and outlet.

All of the second gen Tercels, all versions, all models, have interchangeable radiators. The double row one is best, but in most locations except perhaps if you live in very hot climate, you can get by with the single row radiator.

Summit racing can likely fab an all aluminum radiator up to your specification for perhaps $600, and it would look really cool too, but it would be far less costly to just buy a new one.

I am well aware of the other options available. I appreciate you pointing them out. I am sorry I somehow offended you. I did not mean to. I paid $300.00 for the car. Trying to keep it on the cheap. Again I will spend $100.00 for a radiator. Just would rather not (its 1/3 the cost of the car)

Let me re-phrase the question. Are there any common radiators that can be retrofitted with out much modification. Just looking at options.

Yeah, it's 1/3 of the price, but how long will you be keeping the car? Totally worth the investment to get a new, not clogged radiator for her!

you did not offend me at all, sorry if my post sounded that way, it was not my intent. I was trying to be helpful.

I have never swapped radiators on a Tercel, I have swapped them around from different brands of cars when I had one available for one car but needed it for another, and made it work by fabricating some simple mounts. not too difficult usually, I had a garage full of various prebent hoses from different cars that I could snake around to get it fitted up. I do not know what other radiators would fit in the Tercel, I have always had a spare one available when I needed it. There is always the hazard if it does not fit quite right that you can pop a hose off or damage the radiator, so just make sure it is held in place real good and everything fits properly.

I understand if you are limited on funds and are looking for an inexpressive way to fix it, but the cost of the car is not a valid measure how much you should spend on it. My current daily driver I got for "free", in a trade for some labor, I have put over 200k miles on it since, and spent thousands on it for several engine rebuilds and several clutchs, several sets of brakes, tires, two transmissions, struts and other major repairs since, spread out over the years from normal wear and tear. These are costs that would come with any car that is driven regularly and part of the cost of ownership. Continuing to repair the car as parts wear out or fail is still cheaper than buying another car. If you can get a good radiator from a wrecking yard could be a bargain (I have seen many cars with near new radiators in them at the wrecking yard, and usually buy them when I find them). But a used one with questionable life may not be a bargain, $45 for a used one that lasts two years is no bargain compared to a $120. new one that will last 6 years or more.

The best way (and usually the cheapest way) to fix something is to fix it once. If you can make an alternative radiator work that is great, but if something is not good with the installation you risk costly engine damage. So go ahead and try it, but proceed carefully.

let us know what you find, an alternative radiator that is larger would be a welcome piece of information.
