will this make the tranny howl?
Forum member hwy1tercel came to my place to fix his 5th gear!
Well 5th still works in the car but makes a howling noise.
we took out the tranny and can find nothing wrong with it but this dent on the pilot shaft. Will the small dent cause the noise?

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
I cannot see the dent very well
looks like its on the bearing surface for the inner bearing
i can see where the rollers ride
is it very flat with no sign of missing metal besides that dent
on input shafts that i have seen that are going bad, the wear pattern has dents like that but a lot more of them than one
also if surface is not dead flat but dished or grooved even slightly then it is going bad
loss of teeth can be from loose metal floating in tranny
also can be from running low on oil for long period

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
Thanks, glad to hear about people taking on the trannys.
save that input shaft for the future
a machinist can sleeve it for under 100.00
also i have some new inner input shaft bearings. 20.00 plus shipping

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
This tranny must be done ASAP and the donor tranny has a good bearing in it's intermediate plate.
Next time I rebuild one of these things I will get a bearing from you for sure.
I'll post results when we are done

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
Well the tranny is almost all back together.
Can't seem to get the last snap ring to go on 5th the one that holds the cover for the detent's

Ended up that one of the trannys had steel forks with roll pins holding forks to rod's, While the donor tranny had aluminum forks with bolts holding the forks to the rod's. You can't mix up these parts it's one or the other the races for the forks are wider on the aluminum forks! And rod holes are threaded for a bolt rather than a roll pin.
Took 5th gear off another tranny all together and yet again the internal parts are not a carbon copy's. The last tranny has a VERY different look the end of each shift fork rod sticking out of the main case has "collars with little swinging things on them"

Notice the three different styles of 5th forks! Looks like Toyota tried to made small improvements through the years. The one in the middle matches the photo above it has a spring mechanism on the through hole and a 90 degree back or rib if you will

It's hard for me to get my head around the engineering that goes into these things! All the little bits and pieces joined together to complete a single task
. Forum member hwy1tercel deserves most of the credit for the hands on work on this rebuild but ultimately we did it together(with the help from Bob's videos of course)

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
it will not go on because the snap ring it covers needs to be removed and tightend up
it was expanded too much when removed or re-installed
use channel lock pliers to gently sqeeze it to a tighter shape then use least amount of stretching to get it back on
after its installed you can sometimes squeeze it a bit more
the hole in the metal shield barely fits around a tight snap ring
i gave up on one and dremel tooled the hole larger
also make sure your using the right snap ring
put it into the hole in the metal shield to check size (outside diameter)

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
Well the tranny rebuild is a failure everything back together and a horrible grinding noise comes from the car.NOW IT'S PERSONAL the car get's switched to a 3.7 tomorrow!(a known good unit)
And then the thing comes apart again to find what was done wrong.
It cycled through the gears on the bench just fine now it grinds in the car
Oh seemes to be stuck in 4wd to!!!

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
Those claw shaped swinging things are the things that lock the tranny in gear when it happens, thats what I found in the tranny mine came with, so I have my old tranny with that same shit, but its 3rd and 4th gears are trashed . . .
It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.

Re: will this make the tranny howl?
Hwy1tercel has been on quite the road trip.
Shasta to Houston to southern tip of Mexico then on a ferry to Baha Mexico then up the west coast to my place.
Part of the deal for helping to fix his car was he needs to create a thread telling us all his big adventure in his tercel
