Leak fixing...worth the bother?

Post by CathodeRayTube »

I have a couple small leaks in the the automatic T4 and my AC compressor locked up about a year ago...as far as the leaks, it leaks oil and antifreeze a little bit...i believe the oil is coming from both the camshaft seal and the main front crank seal...its not terrible...i just check it and add a little every fuel fill up or every other one. The antifreeze is only a couple drips and iv only had to add a little once a year or so...and i think its coming from around the water pump gasket...not its shaft.

took covers off an inspected a little today...i was going to do the timing belt and water pump completely...but both appear to be OK...no cracks in the belt/may have been new in recent history...water pump has no play in it and spins free/no drips from weep hole on bottom...so i guess i cant decide if i should take it all apart just to change the main seals and redo the WP gasket with RTV, and put the same belt and everything back on...Or go buy a new WP and new T belt and do everything with new stuff properly...or just say to hell with it and put it back together and ignore it/keep topping fluids off until the belt or WP actually fails...which may be years away..

As for the AC compressor...i was using defrost last winter and it locked up on me...i think i may have over charged the system and the compressor hydrolocked itself sucking in liquid refrigerant...burned the clutch up...so i just removed the belt along side the road and havent messed with it til today...today i removed the compressor...not much refrigerant was left in the system so it must have leaked out somewhere...upon partially disassembling it i was surprised to find that the compressor itself rotates freely and appears to pump ok...sucking my finger up against the inlet when held over it and rotating by hand...but the clutch pully/idler bearing seems to be very stiff...the compressor also seems to sound like its grating/has worn internal bearings when i rotate it by hand even tho it spins freely/OK, compared to the other spare compressor that will be taking its place...going to further disassemble the old one completely i guess...but cant decide if i should attempt to rebuild the old one, just install the spare and be done with it, attempt to do a preemptive rebuild/reseal on the spare and then put it in even tho its OK as is...it may have as much as 175 ish miles on it or may be much younger if it was replaced by the previous owner of the car it was on...no idea. Or spend something like $350 and get a brand new compressor/drier/orifice kit from rockauto and redo it all properly...

Might also be worth mentioning that i use R290 instead of actual R12...seems to work great and its way cheaper as well as environmentally friendly if it leaks or gets vented...have 3 other cars that have been operating fine with it so i doubt the use of it here is what killed this compressor...except again i think i did over charge it last time..

Timing belts are cheap. Get a new one. Save old one as a spare. Redo the cam and front oil seals at the same time.

Why? Winter would probably get you. Last year my 81 leaked a quart every 3000 miles so I left it. All of a sudden during the winter it went up to a quart every 100 miles being leaked out. It was a mess!

Water pump can be reused, just redo the gasket... are you sure it isn't the pump to block that is leaking?

I have a spare water pump gasket I could easily mail you, too.

Tore it down the rest of the way today...going to just do everything properly since id rather not have to FK with it again for a while...including new water pump & stuff...the T belt idler sounds rough/dry...im finding everything i need on rockauto so far...but where do i find the O rings for the tube that goes between the water pump housing and the thermostat housing...and should i do the thermostat while i already have it apart this far as well...?

Also i THINK the O ring on the block corrisponds to the "water pump installation kit" on Rockauto for 1985... but not sure...appears to come with 2 going by the pictures..where do i get this O ring if whats on RA is not it?

That is it, the water pump installation kit, comes with two for some reason, only needs one. Can't tell from your picture but make sure you carefully pry the old one out.

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
