Best corrosion prevention

Post by kitchman »

Hello again,
In an effort to protect my new baby from the winters of N.Y.S. with their excessive use of road salt, looking for measures to combat this unfortunate eventuality. I.E. removing door panels and cleaning out weep openings and introducing oil or some other anti corrosive agents? Also concerned about the body panels and under carriage protection.
Thank you in advance

For the stuff you can get to and won't ever touch (like.. Ever!) a thin coating of zinc based anti-seize is the way to go, it basically acts like a galvanized coating. You do need to pay attention and make sure there is actual zinc in it though, something like this from Loctite is good stuff: http://www.grainger.com/product/LOCTITE ... ound-3KE62
For areas you can't get to like inside of frame rails, I think people on the board have sprayed ATF in them.

That zinc-based antiseize is expensive!
I've had excellent results using regular Permatex antiseize, available everywhere. http://www.permatex.com/products-2/prod ... ant-detail check the MDS PDF for composition; no zinc, however.
The stuff is tenacious! But I've only used it on a few items under the car, like the assorted muffler/tailpipe clamp threads. Its tenacity means you don't want to ever brush against it...

spary LPS3 inside all of the door cavities, and under the car, inside frame rains, inside fenders. Reapply every year.

the very costly commercial airlines have trouble with corrosion in the bottom of the fuselage, condensation collects there from going up to high altitudes cruise, and than landing in tropical/humid climates. they found just spraying LPS as regular maintanince reduces corrosion damage by millions of dollars every year. Buy it in gallon cans and put it in your own spary bottle to save money.

there is a similar, but superior product call "Corrosion-X" but it cost much more, not sure where to buy it. I got it from an aircraft parts and supplier.

For rust spots that do form, sand to bare metal, treat with Naval Jelly, then prime with Zinc Chromate and paint. For areas like inside the door cavities or other out of sight places, use breakfree oil. It was tested to withstand over 180 hours of salt spray, the second place finisher, VVL-800, only lasted two hours.

Not to beat this subject to death, two preventative products are spoken of here. Petros recommends LPS3 and Keith suggests Break Free oil. These are from two different manufactures and which is best used?
Thanks again

I think a simple solution is to treat half the car with one product, and the other half of the car with the other product.

Wait a few years and post the results

I put a mix of used ATF and either diesel or kerosene in a bug sprayer and then spray it on everything a couple times a year...undercarriage, suspension etc... im convinced this helps...or atleast cant hurt. probably isnt the best for the environment with it dripping off on the ground...but hey, Im not having kids, so who cares.

on some of my cars and in select spots, iv gone nuts with Rustouleum undercoating as well.
