the smaller 5th gear on the outputshaft is interchageable thru the years
though there is a slight difference but they will work
the countershafts are not interchangable due to differences in first and 4wd gears

i cannot tell from the picture if anything other than the small 5th gear is damaged
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

If you are after the right part i bet i have one next time you visit your dad come over and see if you can find it.
I don't have time to pull tranny cases apart right now but if you come get it from me it will be free.
You can take a couple entire cases with the clusters inside if you want them

Thanks guys so that little gear and the splines on the shaft that go into the Transaxle are gone. Xirdneh is going to look through his parts and see if he can find me one for my friend. Gottolovem thanks for your offer probably won't have time to head east over the pass and everything but if it turns out that way I will let you know trying to figure this out for my friend so he can make it to burning man in his 83 t4 I found for him about a year ago thanks for your help guys

tell your pal to swing by the bc village camp and find david or simon, we will both be there and are eager for some car talk with other terc-heads!

Xirdneh so the splines that are messes up are the ones that hold that small gear in place on the shaft so he needs the shaft and the gear don't know te measurements because he doesn't have the transmission apart right now he also said the the shaft doesn't stay completely straight when he turned the tranny by hand can you think of a cause for that. Might look like we will need to pick up a new tranny

Sounds like a bad bearing. Gears are usually eaten when a bearing goes bad and allows the shaft to flop around in there.

I have another party intrested in the 3.7 tranny as a backup tranny.
I would rather help get it to someone that already has a broken car.
Ask your freind what their plan is i'm in no hurry.
