Hi All!

Been having a huge problem getting a good 6 speed for my Tercel 4wd!!! <_< Has anyone here swapped out the 6 speed and put in a FWD 5 speed tranny? This car is for commuting only and I don't need the 4WD portion ( I have a Ford F350 for the 4 wheelin' fun! :D ). What I have is a 1983 (built in Sept. of 82) and the engine is strong. Don't really want to get rid of it cause it was getting about 30 mpg and all. :)

Thanks,
Mark

I think the FWD transmission will fit just fine, but I don't know about the shift linkage. The 4WD shift linkage comes right out of the end of the transmission, on the 2WD it has a rod going from the shift lever to the transmission. I have no idea if the floor of the 4WD car has the mounting points for the 2WD shifter.

Hey, thanks for the input. I didn't think of the shifter being remote. There is a Tercel wagon with a 5 speed at a junk yard near by. I think it would be wise for me to go sometime this week and check it out, if the replacement 6 speed is no good. Something to think about. Hmmm, just remembered I have an old labor estimating guide and compared parts schematics for both the trans. Looks like thay are the same where they bolt up to the bellhousing! :) Gonna have to check out the shifter situation......

Take a look at the rear transmission mount too. I can't remember if they're the same or not.

The shifter on the FWD is in a different location. The 4WD has the shifter pushed forward to make room for the transfer.

Well, I looked at it today and you guys are right. The shifter is remote AND in a different location. As well there is a rear Xmember that is further forward. :( I sure hope the tranny that they pull tommorrow is a good one. <_< I kinda have my doubts tho. This will be the 5th one I will have looked at. Thankfully I have only had one to put in that seemed good - well it was for a little while. <_< Like a quarter mile! I have tried to get a hold of Jeff (eatpants) from the forum, but no luck so far. Will try him again tonight to see if his parts car might have a good tranny.

Thanks for the input guys!

Are they dying in 4WD mode? I'm wondering if you're getting the wrong final drive.

Why wouldn't the 5 spd trans work? Didn't Toyota use the Z52 trans in both the FWD hatchback and the 2WD Wagon? Or was there enough difference in the trans tunnel area on the FWD wagon and 4WD that it wouldn't fit?

How are you deciding they are no good?
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

When they are locked up and won't shift! The one I did put in shifted fine in all gears and I could "feel" it go into 1st and 2nd. Which means the gears were there. There was one that had no "feel" in 1st, so I passed on it.

All of the floor stampings are different between the 4WD wagon and the 2WD wagon, every single one. The differences range from the extreme, such as the different spare tire location and lack of side "compartments" in the floor of the 4WD, to the simple, such as the 2WD not having the hole stamped for the insert to mount a dead pedal.

Mounting the 5 speed (or a 4 speed, or even an automatic) from a 2WD wagon or hatch would be possible, but it might involve more modification and fabrication that would be worthwhile unless a parts car was available.

At this point in the Tercel's lifespan, transmissions are becoming their Achilles heel. While there are still some available from the Japanese importers, they are becoming harder and harder to find. If a good used one is located, and you're planning on keeping your car, replacement of the bearings and syncros might be worthwhile to preserve your transmission and your sanity. Those transmissions were weak when they were new, and any preventative maintenance and care in driving will pay off big time in the long run.

Look up Rising Sun Engines. They do trannies too.

I'm still waiting on the ability to go to a machine shop and ask how much they'd charge to cut custom gears. Even modern aluminum versus the aluminum produced 20 years ago is a massive difference in strength.

Rising Sun does sell transmissions, and they have reasonable prices. Unfortunately, I've read a few horror stories (here and elsewhere) about defective transmissions purchased through them. If you don't live close enough to return one in person, and you receive a defective unit, you have to eat the shipping cost to get it back to them. I won't buy something like that unless I can pick it up in person.
